Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) breather bottle TSB

Has anyone out there had any luck having their dealer do the TSB for the crankcase breather bottle relocate under warranty(no charge). If so,how did you approach them with it. My local dealer doesn't seem to want to do any TSB's for free. I can't believe Dodge would want to replace the Cummins in my 4x4 truck after I dump all the oil out going down some gulley off-road.

remove it

and throw the pill bottle away then splice the line and extend it down below the frame and zip tie it off so it wont get caught in the fan ... ... ... . end of story and problem



word of caution ... ..... do not peetrap the line as condensate will freeze in the winter and you will have no crankcase vent

As Whitmore described will take care of the pill bottle but it wont take care of that tsb you are talking about. If you find out how to get it done for free I would love to hear about it. I believe someone here said their dealer wanted like 900. 00 to do it. Losing your oil out in the boonies or on the trail is not the place for it to happen of course is there ever a good place to lose your oil.

I guess I dont know about this TSB, they puke the oil out I cant member the name but someone makes a kit that replaces the vent line with some kinda chingaletta , I member reading something about no more drips on the driveway... ... ..... What the heck was that thing called ?

Not a bad idea. Maybe you are thinking of the airsep. Wonder if it can handle that much oil at once. Could be worth a call to them. The tsb describes puking a decent quantity of oil when you hit a certain down angle. Can't remember what that slope is but it is fairly steep. Doubtful you would find on the pavement but heck these are trucks and many of them do go offroad for whatever reason. Anyway that oil pukes out the vent tube. The tsb moves it from the front of the engine to the side somewhere.

My experience with TSB's and dealers is you have to be experiencing the problem the TSB is for in order for the dealer to do it under warranty. You can't just go in to a dealer and say I heard about XYZ TSB and would like it done for free.



My understanding is Recall work is free regardless of vehicle mileage of if it's still under warranty or not. For free TSB's you 1) still have to be under warranty and 2) be experiencing the problem the particular TSB targets. And even then it is sometimes difficult to get the dealer or DC to perform the TSB. I know because I went through all of it years back with the dealer to get the TSB done on my '95 which added the second steering damper. :-{}

What's the TSB number? What years does it apply to?



There are some tsbs that are customer pay only.

Reading over what's involved with that TSB I would have to be puking a lot of oil to even consider letting the dealer do that much tearing into my truck. They even have to remove the injection pump. Seems like it would just open a whole new can of worms. If you really get on steep slopes and feel the need just get an Airsep, $800.
