Ok gents, I got a 94 2500 4x4. The transmission was rebuilt (standard or lower rebuild) about 30,000 miles ago. Driving home tonight, I was getting a faint grinding wound that would come and go at random. Then I stopped to get the mail and when I put the truck in drive, it was then a rather loud grinding sound. I pulled up to the garage and stopped, left the truck running and looked under the truck to see if I could spot the source. What I saw was metal shavings falling out of the bottom of the transmission. (the inspection plate has been missing for about a year with no problems) The flexplate is clean and smooth, and the TC appears just fine. Any ideas what I am mincing right now? Thanks in advance for any help.

Matt

P. S. I have already pre-selected a vendor to use for a heavy duty rebuild, if needed, so I don't need input on that. Thanks.

A foriegn object could have been thrown up in there and the starter ring on the flywheel is grinding it up. Most likely thing though is the mounting bolts where the flex plate bolts to the torque converter or the at the crank shaft. Could also be the starter drive but I wouldn't think it would last long engaged. bg

Or you have a flex-plate bolt backing out. Try baring the engine over and inspecting the T/C flex-plate assembly. Good luck, Mike

update

After shutting the motor off in a hurry last night, I figured I would deal with it this morning. Unplugged the block heater, got in the truck and was going to quickly start it, drop the plow at the far end of the yard and get it inside to inspect deeper. Well, the starter engaged fine, and it turned over about a half a crank and stopped dead. The power is still on, starter clicks like it is trying to turn, but nothing else happens. I am thinking you guys are correct about a bolt backing out. I am having it towed, thanks AAA. If anyone is unfarmiliar with AAA, look into it, and ask for "plus RV" coverage if you tow, otherwise the trailer costs extra. I have a buddy who is a mechanic near my hometown, and he is going to have a peak at it today. Thanks for the help.

Mod, you can move this to the archives or delete it, I no longer need the "911 forum" help. Thanks.

It could be that the starter is staying ingauged , or the TQ bolts [ warentee from trans rebuild] next may be flex plate cracked .
