Off Roading Pics of me Wheelin around Colorado

Competition Truck Pull New Lexington, OH

I purchaced some headlights with higher wattages to replace my stock ones (one burnedout). After plugging the newones in I went for a spin up in the hills and was dissapionted that they wern't brighter!

At home I got out the fluke87 to see what the problem was. I read 9. 4volts between dim and ground.

Thinking how to fix this (way to much voltage drop). I bought two lighting relays, two 30amp circitbreakers, and a diode. I ran #12 wire to breaker then through relay to light. I used the old lighting wiring to control relays, placing diode between bright and dim wires so when I hit brights they all come on Oo. Oo.

What a difference!

This works great for off roading!

Happy bombing Eric

Eric,

I don't know about sealed beams, but I have seen 9007's literally explode when both hi and low beam filaments were used at the same time. I did it as a test and after 4 hours the plastic lamp melted and the glass of the bulb had a large "blister" on it. A day or two later, the bulb exploded while sitting on the bench!

The burner in a sealed beam is similar to the 9007, so it *could* happen. Use them judiciously - maybe only with vehicle moving and airflow over the lamp. Hopefully you won't have the same experience. (The relay for higher voltage at the bulb is definitely a good idea. ) Happy wheelin'!
