2000 truck is broke down on the side of the road. Code 1693. Truck acts like it is out of fuel, but it should have plenty of fuel. Going back to put more fuel in. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

Mike C.

The 1693 is a general fault coded. It just means that there is something wrong with the ECM or PCM. There should be some other codes. They just might not have been stored. Most likely problem is the vp-44. Usally when a lift pump dies, it takes out the injection pump(vp44). Do you have a fuel pressure gauge to check lift pump pressures? Can you crack an injector line or fuel line to see if fuel is being pumped? If you turn the key and bump the starter, without starting the engine, do you here the lift pump run?

Fuel pressure gauge is reading low. The lift pump is running and occasionally fuel pressure will go to 15, but fall to between 1 and 3 when cranking and then doesn't come back up for awhile. Nothing should be frozen. Truck was in warm garage all night. Did replace front brakes, hydro booster and flushed power steering out yesterday. Drove truck about 5-10 miles since then before brake down.

Yep the 1693 is a companion code set as a default when another code exists. Odd question but how is the fuel filter doing? Never the less that lift pump sounds questionalbe! To avoid further damage I would just flat out grab a lift pump.

The pressure falling while cranking is fairly common, but should recover pressure. The fuel pump loses voltage while the motor cranks. Can you crack a couple injector lines open to check for fuel at the injectors?

Help !! Help !! Help !! Things are really bad now. I am being drug home by a powerstroke. I'll never hear the end of this. When I get home I'm going to change the fuel filter and check the lines. The lift pump is running and seems fine.

Well got the beast running. I ended up pulling the lift pump off and holding it in my hand and cycled it on. It seemed to have enough suction. I had another lift pump that I took before as it was getting weak and did the same thing and it felt about the same. Put the newer of the two back on and before I hooked up fuel line I blew some air through it and could here bubbles in the tank. I hooked all the lines back up and had a friend keep cycling the lift pump while I was bleeding air from schrader valve by the filter. When I started getting good fuel I cracked two injector lines until I had fuel then tightened everything back up and then she fired up and ran a little rough until all air was out. Filter did look good though. Could the code I was getting be caused by an over boost code. I had to send my Edge Easy back to get replaced and left the boost elbow on which I think would set the over boost code. Thanks for all the help

It's hard to tell how long the 1693 code has been in the computer. It could have been from a long time ago. The code that set it off may have been cleared after the engine had been ran a few times. The 1693 just might have hung around. Mine still had the 1693 code the day I traded it in. I never worried about it. As for the pump, it could have been as simple as a dirty connection at the connector.

Well dropped fuel tank today to check the screen and drained out just about the same amount of fuel that I put in yesterday. Screen was a little dirty and a little bit of dirt in the bottom of tank. I guess my sending unit is not working properlyas it showed more fuel than I really had. Will try to get new one tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.
