Hello All:

I am working on a '91 CTD with a broken cam (one of the gear case bolts fell out). I have a couple questions.

Can you pull the cam out with the engine in the frame? Any ideas on how to pull the broken cam (nose broke off).

I have made the lifter pullers out of 1/2" wooden dowel rods, however they don't seem to work very well. I think only 3 of the 12 actually stick into the lifter. Any ideas here?

I thank you for your help in advace.

Chris

Put a bit of chamfer on the end of the wooden dowel, and slit it with a hacksaw to about 3/4 inch so the end will spring as it is hammered in. You need to remove the lift pump anyway, so use that hole and a screwdriver against a lobe to start the cam moving out.

I read one post that said to sharpen the dowel rods to a sharp point, so that is what I did. I guess what you are saying is just to chamfer them a little bit, rather than to a point. It seems like that would work better. I haven't had a chance to work on it anymore since my last post, but maybe tomorrow afternoon.
