Hi everyone-

Long story short: I went to my local shop to pick up my truck from a/c service and there was a 2002 2500 there with id numbers on it from an RV hauler and Ohio plates. Not that common in my neck of the woods. Turns out the owner was delivering an RV to Maine when something went way wrong with the truck. He had it towed in and the shop diagnosed it as a broken crankshaft. This is the best diesel shop in the area, so I'm sure their opinion is the right one. The shop found a used engine (71k) for $3500. Add in labor and anything else needed for the job and the total cost is estimated around $4500. The guy doesn't have money for this so, he's really screwed. The shop said maybe the best idea would be to find someone to put it on a trailer and haul it back home so he can deal with it there and maybe have some better options. If the money were there, the shop could have the engine swap done by Friday night, but it doesn't look like the owner will go that way.

His dispatcher is trying to get another truck to finish the RV delivery, but this guy still is stuck here in CT. If there is anyone in New England that can help a brother in need out please reply here. He's in Tolland, CT and going to Elkhart, IN (though his plates said Ohio, he did say IN). I'd run him out there myself over the long weekend, but I can't as I'm already booked.

Thanks.

Correction. Just talked with him. He's going home to Ohio. He said he's about 10 hours away from home right now. IN is where his dispatch office is.

Yeah, I agree. I was hoping he'd be able to do it not only to get him back on the road, but also because it would breathe new life into his truck. The replacement engine was already out of the donor vehicle and waiting to go at a junkyard nearby.

This guy said he bought the truck in 2009 and has had nothing but trouble since. The transfer case nuked itself-things like that. He's a fairly young guy- maybe early to mid 20s. This is his first encounter with a Dodge Cummins. Seems like the truck had a really hard life before he got it.

Ouch!

I grew up in northern Ohio but live in Colo. now.

So... If this had happened in my part of the country, Colorado, I would be right there to help this young man get-it-home. I hope a TDR Member in that part of the USA will be able to help him. Pay-it-forward so to say.

I stick with my TDR subscription because of the great membership that offers advice to other members to help keep our trucks running at lower expense... .

Not trying to preach. Just feeling very sorry for him.
Tom

Thanks to all concerned. Just spoke to the shop and the guy found someone with a dolly to tow the truck home. Not sure how or who but they left this morning.
