I'm stuck 2 hours from home. Truck took a mild front end hit, rear ended a friends field car. Immidietely Wait to start, trans temp, water in fuel, check engine, and gen lights came on. Tach and speedo stopped working. Still ran fine, but wouldnt shift into 1st or OD, and the alternator isnt charging. Pulleys move ok, but alt. seems a bit rough. Drove to a friends, smelled smoke. There was a wire stuck in the leftmost, farthest to the ground pulley. They had roasted right off. 2 wires together, looked like they had some sort of connector on them. I searched for about an hour, couldnt find where the hell these things went. Played around with alll the wires, fuses, everything. starts right up, but battery wont hold. Can anyone tell me where to go next?? I'd like to get to work tomorrow lol. Also cant get the key on off code thing to work.

Thanks

Corey

I believe you are refering to the wires to the engine speed sensor. The sensor sets above and on the passenger side of the crankshaft dampner. This sensor tells the computer that the engine is running and to allow the alternator to charge. Also provides the feed for the tach. Don't know but maybe the wires shorted or grounded is messing up or maybe has damaged the computer (PCM) for the other functions. The key on/off to get codes is for 2000 and up trucks. You would have to find a DRB scan tool to read the codes. Hope this helps.

Any idea how i can get this thing home and then deal with it? I can see the wires coming out of the pulley, but dont know where they go to. Also, 12 Valves have the code thing as well. Check engine light should flash multiple times to give codes.

If it runs, drive it. My engine speed sensor went bad, I experienced the same problems you are. I proceeded to drive the truck for two days while I searched the threads here for the answer. I put way more than two hrs of drive time on the batteries. Just don't get greedy because the power will eventually go away! Luck.

i only have one batery in it, and don't have first or OD. It would be a long and sketchy trip, im pretty sure i wont make it. Any idea where that wire should run to? if i were to just splice some wire back in there think it would be ok??

Well, I missed the part about batteries not holding. If you can get the transmission to go into gear maybe you can get the feul shut off solenoid to stay on by anchoring the arm up somehow. Twelve valves don't need voltage to run, just to keep the feul flowing. I'm shooting from the hip now and this is what I would try. That or call a wrecker. The engine speed sensor is located above the harmonic balancer, held there by two bolts. Was this fender bender a love tap or did you seriously smack and jam things around? It takes alot to get to the sensor in question methinks. Let me know... .

I'm not driving my truck today so I can't go out and look but I think the speed sensor has pretty long wires attatched to it that go to a plug up by the thermostat housing. Those two wires join up with others that go into a larger bundle on top of the engine. If no one else jumps in with wire colors I'll call my wife and have her stick her head under the hood (which I'm sure she'll just love!)

Got her Home

Thanks for the replies folks. Ended up taking her to the closest shop i could find. They hooked up a scan tool, and said what the hell... . Apparently the truck wasnt giving off any data at all. The wires on the pulley i was referring to were apparently for the AC, and should make no difference. The tech and myself played around for a while, tested all the circuits, everything seemed good, except for the 20A fuel pump big funny lookin blue fuse. Blew that a couple times, then changed the search to around the LP. Tech unplugged a wiring harness, that was melted inside. He said he didnt know what it was going to, i looked in, and it appeared to be to the fuel heater, but after following the wires, it seems to connect somewhere else, slightly forward of the fuel heater. I cant figure out where it goes to, but my only other guess without taking the intake horn off is that it goes to the IP. Truck is fine with the wire unplugged. Any idea where to go now? Why does the truck still run fine without a fuel pump fuse??
