I know that several members have previously reported this problem but it is worth reminding other members to inspect your hitch platform for stress cracks. Mine developed major cracks at the mounting ears.
The holes in my Ram factory hitch receiver tube where the pin is inserted to secure the hitch draw bar had become so badly worn and egg shaped that I experienced an annoying clunk each time I engaged the clutch when towing my TT. I purchased a new Putnam Class V receiver platform from Southwest Wheel to replace it.
When I removed the factory hitch today I was surprised to discover 1-1/2" to 2" cracks had developed in each of the rearmost ears that attach the hitch platform to the truck frame. Not just hairline cracks, complete separation. In a few more thousand miles of towing the rear mounting ears would have completely separated from the hitch platform leaving the center and front mounting ears to carry the tongue weight and dynamic towing forces. Not a comforting situation.
My Ram has 92k on the odometer and 75 to 80k towing miles.
If you've done a lot of towing with a factory hitch I recommend crawling under the rear of your truck and inspecting the rear mounting ears of your hitch platform.
