I blew my Getrag and may be my clutch in my flat bed plowing a couple of days ago. Argh. I actually drove it home in nuetral!!! had to slip the clutch alot to get moving . . truck still smells like burnt clutch. .

It progressed from no problems driving my wife to work in the snow. On the way back,it would pop out of 5th gear . . it has never done that so I was a little curious. I plowed a few driveways and it was getting harder to shift little by little. In my second to last driveway it started squealling like a fan belt under the truck. . so I shut it off, as I shoveled. I figured it was the throw out bearing or pilot bearing in the flywheel. It may have been the pocket bearing for the transmission shaft?? I attempted to drive to my last drive way and it wouldn't shift unless I floated the gears without the clutch. Finally at the last driveway I made one pass and went to back up. It wouldn't shift into gear. so I tried turning the engine off, putting in 1st gear, then starting it, when I then let the clutch out. . it stalled. Same situation with reverse. With the engine running and clutch depressed, I put it in nuetral, let out the clutch out and the truck tried to move... so thats how I finally drove it home 3 miles. I had to slip the clutch to get going though. It seemed like it was stuck in 4th gear. Maybe it broke a shift fork? I have aparts truck with a decent getrag so I could swap it out. I am debating cutting the floor open and pulling the top off the trans to see if its broken fork. If it is, do you think swapping top and forks will work? or is the trans proabbly shot. I never had any other issues with this trans in the 4 or 5 years I've run it. I was over filled, BUT I didn't check the oil this winter. So it may have leaked down. I'll find out tommorrow I guess. any ideas?

Thanks,

Deo

I chose to rebuild mine based on a couple posts from mysteryman. I had experienced EXACTLY the symptoms you described!!! I was looking on here at doing a conversion to the NV-4500 and stumbled on this thread https://www.turbodieselregister.com...orum-1989-1993/151380-replacement-getrag.html

Even after sourcing a kit, purchasing a transmission jack, press, a new input shaft, and other specialty tools needed... I was still money ahead on rebuilding mine as opposed to a reman or conversion :)

I have over 250k on my rebuild and never a problem :D

When you drain the oil, that will tell you something. It could be several issues causing what you describe. The squeal is a bad sign. It is obviously locked in gear or the input/output shaft are sized together. I don't think I would just pull the top. Even if it is just the shifter/forks, you might need some new pieces in the clutch area, including pilot or throw out brg.

When you want/think something is simple, it usually isn't:{

A gutbag with issues? Odd! ;)

Do you have a trans temp gauge by chance? Would help clarify melting vs broken parts.

well I pulled the donor trans, and n9205 today. . . . tommorrow I have to pulle the clutch, move the trucks around with the tractor, and do the same with the broken truck . . fun fun. .

... does actually sound like fun... . I do it all the time... . I like my tractor, and I don't want it to think I show preference to my Dodges..... it has a Cummins, too. :D

Keep us up to date on what has happened to it... .

It would be more fun if it was my tractor lol... . its my uncle's tractor and he lives next door. Its a John Deere, so no cummins ha. The other "fun "part is swapping them on a dirt driveway outside in the snow... good thing I have a few sheets of runner rubber and a 6' long piece of 3/8" plate. Its the only way to get the borrowed trans jack it roll. I took some pictures yesterday. I can look at them in the summer and shake may head ha.
