The gearcase inspection cover (i believe thats what its called) on my '91 D350 blew off while I was driving today and sprayed about a quart of oil over the front of the engine. What I am wondering is why it blew off and were do I get a new inspection cover? The local part stores can't seem to find one.

Do you mean the round cover that covers the injection pump drive gear? It should also have your oil fill spout attached to it, it just screws on, like a 1/4 turn. If so that is a Dodge/Cummins item.

After looking at the problem more closely I noticed my gear case is cracked. Anyone know were I can get a new or used case for a 91? since I am going through the labor I am also considering replacing my VE with a P7100. Anyone know the prices and availability of a P7100 and matching fuel lines?

sound's like the Killer dowel Pin is the cause of the crack I would just replace what you need and leave it stock if you do the PPump swap you also need gas pedal cable to match motor just did a swap in jan wasn't impressed with the p pump motor's . maybe that is just me dono.

I kinda figured the kdp was the cause, I'll figure out exactly what happened when I have it disassembled.

You also have five bolts that hold the front case to the block that will need to be addressed while you have the front cover off. Four of those bolts can be removed, cleaned and loctited and reinstalled. the fifth has to be backed out as much as possible - it's behind the pump drive gear if I remember correctly. You will have to bend a wrench to fit, clean it and use locktites weeping product.

I just had the kdp come out on my Dad's 91. I think I had around $700 in parts for new gear case and the timing cover. The metal gearcase cover comes with a new crankshaft seal installed if you need it. I may be able to help you with part numbers if you need some.

I have the timing cover off and am wondering if anyone has ever removed the timing case and what the procedure is for that.

To remove the case, you will have to pull the cam out, or use a suitable puller to remove the cam gear. Then remove the injector pump, vacuum pump and all bolts securing the case to the block and oil pan. If you pull the gear from the cam, you will have to heat the gear to reinstall.
