What do you getrag experts think of this? This is the 2wd getrag from a donor truck for my crew cab. It is a reman unit, unknown miles, I only drove the truck off the trailer and around the block a few times ( no bed, plates, lights etc). During the test drive, it was quiet, shifted good up to 4th gear, never got it fast enough for 5th gear. No grinding in gears. I just now opened it up for an inspection, drain, clean, new silicone for the top cover and pto covers etc. Crew cab is dying to get out and run. How bad we looking? And what is this piece called anyway? Thanks. BTW, the crack in the piece is pretty much center in the first pic, the second pic, I rotated the input shaft a tad, the crack is to the bottom in the pic.

Well here you go Bill. Looks like the 3rd/4th gear syncro has a crack in it. :p Hopefully a bearing/syncro kit will have that peice in it, but James would probably know... ... ... ... . James, are you out there?... ... ... .....

Are you going to bring out a kit for me to install at SOP? I hope not because that would take all day... ... ..... I'll bring some tools though, and try and explain what I did.

Do you want me to bring it home with me and fix it up?

Nah, I figure it would be time consuming, maybe just a look through. I will need to figure out the best kit/what not that I need etc, probly won't know and have it by Friday.

We'll discuss at SOP. Probly not, it's probly time for me to learn getrag :(.

Ahhhh..... Good luck in this one, Bill. It is your 1-2 synchro assembly. You will have trouble getting into 2nd from anything less than a complete stop (and only then if you are in gear while slowing down- I'm doing it now). I have the exact same thing in my getrag from the 1990, which is now in my 92. See this thread for details and a pic. I found one from an ebay vendor for $200 new. mysteryman may have some, too. I found a used transmission I am going to look at this week. Sorry, cant post the price- too low for public viewing. I have a few other leads.

Other than that, your gears all look good. Any side to side slack in the input shaft? MMiller, come get me when you go over the getrag stuff. I have one I need yet to redo.

Duh, yeah, I don't know what I was thinking, 3-4 aint right.

OK, I'm sure you'll know when we start taking apart the getrag. I'm disassembling, and Bill can put it back together... . :-laf

Yep. Haven't been on the computer much for a week or so. Daniel answered the question. A while back he posted a picture of that part out of the transmission. My guess is that heavy shifting when first starting off is what breaks that part.

The only spare I had went to a member in Canada. My suggestion for anyone with a Getrag is to have a spare and maybe even two. They will get more scarce with time and that is not good for us. Aparently the bugs have been worked out of the 4500 so we will always have that option.

James

James, do you mean we should get a spare Getrag or a spare 1-2 synchro? Also, how can we avoid this failure of said synchro?

Well I was thinking about two spare trannies, but I also have a spare truck or two. So anything you can get your hands on at a good price is a good idea from my way of thinking. With three running trucks to choose from, I have not had a time in the last eight years that I was 'down' because of a dead truck.

I have mentioned this before. I have less than the price of one new truck in all the operating and spare parts trucks that I own. Insurance on the three running trucks (without collision which I don't carry) is less than the cost of insurance on a new truck since I would be making payments and the bank would require full coverage. Just my point of view.

How to avoid the broken part? Well it is only a guess as I said, but it is probably from rushing the shift into low or second when first engaging the transmission. It could well be related to the lubricity of the oil that you choose. The syncro is required to stop the motion of the gears so that you can shift into (whatever) gear. Since the reverse gear is used the least, I shift into reverse or at least press the lever toward reverse to stop the gear motion then shift into (usually) second to start off.

My trucks are part of my bread and butter. While I work the snot out of them, I also pet them every way I can. That may well sound like a contradiction but I pull off easy with only the necessary throttle, I don't try to make them get to full speed in the least amount of time. I never snap shift or snap the clutch out. So there is not one single thing I reccommend but rather just respect your truck.

Get a new part but if that is the first gear syncro, remove the broken part altogether and shift into second then to first when and if you want first. It would be like the older new process trannys that didn't have a syncro on first.

James

I like the way this sounds. This is from your old thread Daniel. One could just remove this piece and run with it?

" One could just remove this piece and run with it?"

If I am remembering correctly, that syncro can be installed either way so the broken piece could be removed completely and then installed so that it would sync second which is the gear most start off in. This would be a 'get-by' and I have no proof that it would in fact work. I have seen that entire shift segment broken to chunks so go with caution whatever you do.

Daniel, what opinion do you have on this?

When the melanoma finally consumes my truck I will be auctioning my Getrag.

If it goes before then I'm not sure yet if I'd bother rebuilding or replacing... .

It would probably cost more than the truck is worth

Jay- I have a cab that matches your cab perfectly. Only bad thing is, it's an 84, so the color may differ a hair. No rust or dents. though.

Bill- my transmission goes into 1st just fine rolling or stopped, so I'd say if you cant find a part, turn it around so the crack is facing the rear of the transmission and run it til you can find the part.

Blasphemey! Reviler of the faith! I cast thee out satan!

Sorry Jay, got carried away there. I thought you said it's not worth rebuilding. And you a member of the 1st generation and all! :-laf

Just what I needed

Bill, when you go parts shopping, just go ahead and get two of everything, I'm good for it. :-laf

I can't wait until Michael shows us how to fix this. :D

I've been driving the non-shiftin' truck for two weeks now, and its been drivin' me batty. :-{}

Now who said I wouldn't get another one? You just have to pick your battles... .

oh, ok. ;)

By the way I'll be there in an hour to give you a tow, (stick in the mud) 'cause it's almost time to go! :D
