I was having ome work done on my `92 D250 2wd truck. The mechanic doing the work on the truck has been a Cummins mechanic for 30 years and has specalised in dodge since `90. He informed me today that the rear driver's side rear axle hub has cracked and needs to be replaced. HELP! Dodge dealer wants to convert the rear end over to an "new style dana 70 that doesn't require removing the seal to remove the drums. I need input please

I'd recommend replacing it as soon as you can. It'd probably be more economically prudent to find a good used axle assembly, as I dont think the spindle itself is replaceable like it is on a trailer axle. I went through this 2 years ago- had some wear on a spindle where the bearing sits. I ended up getting a Dana80.

As for Dodge's recommendation to get the latter style axle, with the outboard drums (slide drums off to do brake work, as opposed to R&R the entire hub), it's up to you.

So, you can put a 1stGen Dana70, 2ndGen Dana70 (should be a direct swap), or a 2ndGen Dana80 (some mild changes- u-bolts and brackets, shorten driveshaft).

Good luck. You might also post in the 1stGen forum- I go there almost daily, but dont get in here more than once weekly.
