Archived Broken Tap in head bolt hole!

Hi Folks



Cleaning the holes in the block to finish putting my head back on and the stupid bottoming tap goes and breaks off. I have been able to Drill a hole in the tap using some Bad Dog Bits (great by the way) but I can't seen to get the rest of the tap away from the sides of the threads. ( Its in the first hole right under the cowl lip) Any help would be great

Is there enough of the tap remaining in the threads to get a tap extractor to make contact? You might try a left-handed drill, sometimes that will work. Always be extra careful when using a tap ( those stupid things will break at the most inconvenient time ). Good luck.

Can you get the nose end of needle nose pliers in the tap flutes? Under the cowl might be tight, but if you can drill, then these might help.

When I was a kid, I used to watch my brother work on his old car all the time. This was his solution to fixing a broken bolt or tap.



1. If you have anything in your hand, throw it and scream out an obsenity.



2. Find a wrench and throw it at a wall as hard as you can, then scream out and obsenity.



3. Kick the trash can as hard as you can, then scream out and obsenity.



4. Kick the car (in this case your truck) and tell it that you are going to drive it off a cliff as soon as it runs again, then scream out and obsenity.



5. Calm down, pull out an extractor kit and remove the broken bolt/tap.



6. Get car (or truck) running and then forget about the whole incident.

I want to hear about these Bad Dog Bits ... ... ... . after 20+ years as a machinist the only thing I've found that works is carbide or EDM for a broken HSS tap.

if it's a fluted tap they make a removal tool for them, it has 4 specially shaped bits that fit the flutes and allow you to back it out, i have one for 8mm taps and it's saved the day, not sure where you'd find one online but a place intown had mine when i was nearly screwed so they are not impossible to come by
