sorry finger slipped

Anyways, have a customer in the shop who had a valve spring break anbd took out his entire engine!!! Broke a valve off, which in turn took out two others in the same cyl, took out hte piston, head, broke the cyl wall,,, it just keeps going. . Unfortunately, the vehicle has 380,000 plus km`s and the cust just bought it 6 weeks ago:{ . Has anyone else ever heard of such a problem happening to a mighty cummins?? Garth

Cummins has made about 750,000 engines for Dodge.

Just about everything and anything can happen to something made in that quantity.

But, that is not common.

I know of at least 1......

Nope-not mine... ..... but Hanna had 1 stumble into their shop about a year ago missing and generally running crappy-that's what it was. Thankfully for the owner it got rectified before anything else went bad. I think at the time there were 3 or 4 springs in Chrysler's parts system :rolleyes: so we all figured it had to be a very rare occurence.

Would suck to be the guy who it happened to though-that's gotta be well into five figures Canadian to repair it eh Garth?

$13,000 plus

Unfortunately for him it also stuffed a valve head into the turbo as well which brought the total higher than we first anticipated:{

We are doing all we can for the poor ******* short of paying for the bill for him. . I think we may be able to push a sleeve in the hole, throw some pistons,brgs,rings and a head on it and be able to salvage the block which should help save him a pile-o-dough. There has been quite a bit of:-{} between the shop(sales) and the customer over the incident but I feel it should all wash out in the end. Garth

I talked to one person too.

A couple of months ago I met a guy at the race track that has a '98 12v 5spd clubcab. I looked at the truck, and he still had the engine block core sitting in the bed of his truck. I asked about it and he said he had bought the truck about a year ago... .

A month ealier it broke a valve spring, which dropped the valve far enough to break off the head of the valve, which bouned around the cylinder and snapped the head off the other valve. There were scores on the wall, dings on the underside of the cylinder head, a small chunk of block taken out of the top wall/deck and both valve heads were hammered and fused into the piston bowel.

He had to buy a new long block. His wife was there and expressed how unhappy she is with the truck. I think she said it cost $8500 to get replaced. I took pics of it but they didn't come out very clear.

While we were putting an engine break on a friends 96 CTD, we discovered a broken valve spring when we were changing the valve springs to the heavier ones. Told him that he was very lucky we did the engine brake install when we did before he dropped a valve and lunched his engine.
