Competition Darren Morrison's 10.40 Video

Due to the reschedule of Clash of the Titans, Keating and I found ourselves with nowhere to run and me with the spouses permission to get out of town. So, long story short, we ended up at the Rainbow Classic in Cinci Ohio at Tri State Dragway.

Excellent turnout. Temp is perfect. Track is hooking. We wait in staging for 30 minutes (this is a 1/8 mile event, but are allowing us to run 1/4 mile passes). He backs into the water box, rolls forward and does his trademark burnout. Builds the pressure in the brakes, gets the boost up, and then this noise... . this huge bang. After a few seconds, the truck makes this Stars Wars like sound of something large slowing down. First look under the truck shows no fluids. Sweet. No smoke coming from under the hood. No fire supression system going off.

Opening the drivers door, the floor of the cab is covered in shrapnel... it's like a grenade went off. The front yoke on the drive shaft has decided it was done. Needle bearings everywhere. I find a piece of the yoke in Keatings helmet afterward.

The driveshaft loop has served it's purpose and quite well. He will be retired. The end on the driveshaft is thrashed. Can't get the slider off the Lenco... even with a hammer. Our day is done. :(

Didn't bring the camera. I'll try to get some photos tomorrow before I leave for SEMA.

Thanks be to the safety gear that gave it's life to protect the driver. Amen.

Good to hear no one was hurt. I had a front yoke/u-joint that exploded at about the 100ft mark in a front engine dragster. Took everything from the rear of the engine to the diff out, trans and all. The only "wet wear" damage was a bruised foot. Safety equipment is good!

Oh, yeah... The dragster now has a slip joint instead of a u-joint...
