Hello to all!

This may get long, so please bear with me. Brother took his truck in for an estimate in getting the front end completely replaced. Has had problems with it in the past using up four sets of tires in 41000 miles. So, he was talking to the repair guy at the shop and he was told of a used 2001 Dodge Cummins 2500 Q. C. FWD with 55-thousand miles on it at the dealer that was really nice. So, brother went to look at it, and he really likes it. The truck is extremely clean! But, he has a couple of questions.

1. Is the front end in a 2001 2500 Q. C, FWD, the same as in his current truck? "See Sig. "

2. Is the exhaust pipe on the 2001 similar to the one in his current one? He is curious if his e-break will fit.

3. What goose neck hitch is being used by you heavy haulers out their? The one in his current truck is one that turns over in the bed. It is unfortunately rusted in place and is no longer a turnover hitch.

If anyone has ideas on any of these questions, or any suggestions for him to know about, please let us know. Thank you in advance!

I'll take a stab at answering this...

The front and is the same axle (Dana 60) as his old truck, but it lacks the central axle disconnect (I think). I don't know for sure what year they got rid of it, so the 2K1 might have it.

If the 2001 is an automatic, it will have the small turbo (HY35). His e-brake should work, since the outlets are the same. (again, I may be wrong)

I don't tow heavy, so i can't help you there. I would suggest a bunch of Kroil and get that turnover ball out of there. .

I would suggest checking out Dave Fritz's Ram site-- I think he has all the year-to-year changes listed...

I know that the exahust brake will bolt up but ya might have to git the adapter for the brake cause the elbow on the turbine housing needs to be removed. As for the goose neck hitches go I kind of like the draw-tite hitches. they hide out of the way well and usually dont have amny problems with them

The brake should fit from 98. 5 to at least 2001. 5. at least a jake will

Don't know of any adapter that will be needed, the ebrake will just replace the elbow bolted to the exhaust housing of the turbo.

If the new truck is an auto he will need some kind of lockup device?

You can find a new b&w turnover ball on ebay for around 250. 00

Old truck manual or auto?

Front end the same less CAD, until 2002 I believe.

Hello to all!

I am sorry that I did not sspesify. The new truck he is looking at is a 6-speed with the NV5600. He wanted to get away from the automatic transmission he currently has. He is afraid that with all that he hauls, it will go south.

So, it sounds as if he may not be doing a hole lot better with the 2001 in reguards to the front end. He does not want to pay $$$ for Tyrods, and everything else in the future.

Thanks for the info on the Goose neck hitch.

Please keep the suggestions coming! We both really apreciate all the information we can get! Thanks again!!

I have an '01 (see sig) and only had a problem with the front end eating tires once. After I took it to a good alignment shop, those worries were over.

To answer your questions based on my truck:

1) Yes, the front ends are the same. If the truck has disc brakes on the rear, the CAD may be missing on the front.

2) Exhaust brake *should* fit fine. I know of no differences in the exhaust between '98. 5 and '01

3) Draw-Tite does make a good hitch. Howard (Grandpappy) has a NICE one with airbags and shocks and has nothing but good things to say about it. I saw it in January and it is nice. You can see a pic of it here:

Hope this helps, YMMV, etc.

soak the turnover ball with penetrating oil let sit over night soak again... then smack the SH** out of it with a 4x4 hunk of wood and a sledge and it should break free

Duane is 100% right on the others

Sorry, I just read my previous post and I confused myself.

2001. 5's, (disc brake rear) have the front axle disconnect.

Mine does, build date 11/00, somewhere south of the border, 55 block.

CAD = Central Axle Disconnect?

Common Axle Disconnect?

Crappy Axle Disconnect?

Well, I think everbody else said this but...

The '01 had drums the '01. 5 had discs out back.

the E-brake will swap.

The GN. I have a pop-up hitch and a hide-a-ball both work great.

The front end has the CAD but the ball joints are different. None of them are adjustable and the lower are not greasable. Aftermarket adjustable upperjoints are available to coreect alignment issues.

The rest should be very similar.

Later,

Mark

I use PB Blaster. Never failed me yet, unlike WD-40.

Hello to all!

Well, he did it! Their is a new black truck parked outside. It is extremely clean, and he is a proud papa! And, the dealer did not treat him to badly in the process!

Thank you to all who have put their input in on his questions. We both really apreciate it!! Now, the fun begins. Gages, Injectors, fueling boxes, and all of that good stuff!!

Again, thanks to all!
