i looked under the hood the other day and i noticed that my turbo was a brown goldish color is this normal or is something wrong with my turbo

I've seen a number of Holset compressor housings on Dodge Rams that were colored that way.

the clear coat that they are sprayed with tarnishes from the heat.

correct me if i'm wrong but i've only seen it on the 2000's and newer.

My '98. 5 has a beautiful golden colored turbo :D ! As said above it's the clear coat turning colors from the heat. Most of the trucks I've seen with yellowed compressor sides have either been on a dyno, towed very heavy, or were bomb'd. Mine started yellowing around 45,000 miles (first dyno run) - been getting deeper ever since (close to 100,000 miles now).

brown

Standard with use!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Heat metal-expose to weather what color will it turn????

If you could stand the ride , under the hood when in use say 65 mph with water temp at say 190 deg ,dark night,no lights on,you would see why it is brown>>>>now gross out with a 20 k lb trailer /with the same out side lighting(none) a winter front still on the front end(cover for rad, supposed to be used only - 10 deg weather--- not still in place say + 10 deg) you have rendered the intercooler/after-cooler/air to air exchanger--what ever you want to call that thing'ie in front of the rad ,behind the a/c cond. in-op(abv. -for we dont need this) and why has melt down happened/blowen gskt??

There are cook books out there for an oem set up eng, that you can set raw food on the manifold and run for x-hrs /min(can of beans/corn beef hash ect) ready to eat!! even in the deep cold these parts get Hot!!!!

Turn up the fuel-shut(winter front + 10 deg at highway speeds) off the air/lack of coolant things get pink even without the rad cover ----then turn Brown!!

brown re-visited

Forgot with time -dependet on use!

Enjoy the ride!!!!

A natural happing (lets call- it cure'd as in ham)which can be accelatred with the use of other factor's

Hell mines darker than that picture!

Seen mine like that after my trip from Alaska to New York and back to Alaska yankin 9000lbs. That was at 10,000 miles now im at 41,000 and still ticken. Cant wait to replace it soon with the HX-40 or B1:D

miles to replacement

Mirisg

if you are waiting for a failure to have the excuse to the little wife why you have to replace the T-bo $$$$$$$ you have a long wait,700k+ and still in place, but i do know how to make it fail sooner. Need any more pointers??

The clear coat on the compressor housing carmelizes from the high heat generated by the compressor ... . it can get to temps in excess of 400F when boost is pushed over 35 PSI on a warm day.

You bet ya!

Sure would! :D I can give you my number if you would like. Gotta keep remindin me. I dont wanna forget. The G/F wants to know if she can come to? She gets excited over the black smoke and the power of the truck when I let her drive. Should have my transmission and guages installed by then. Maybe ill be able to get my turbo and install it there. Oo. Please keep in contact.
