BTU of diesel vs. gas

Anyone know what the BTU value of a gallon of diesel is compared to a gallon of gas? I remember reading that diesel BTU is higher, but can't find the info. Also, any web sites links would be an added bonus.



We have this guy in our 4x4 club that thinks he knows everything about a diesel engine since he has a diesel FJ40 Land Cruiser. Of course, we all know that a real diesel is a Cummins. .

A lot of people think diesel has more BTUs because it's more flammable as a liquid but when vaporized diesel is more flammable



10 BTUs = 10 match heads



125,000 BTUs = 1 gallon of gasoline



149,000 BTUs = 1 gallon of heating oil, diesel fuel, or jet fuel



6 million BTUs = 1 barrel of crude oil



2,455 Btus = energy required for 1 horsepower for one hour





7. 3 trillion Btus = amount of oil being carried by the Exxon Valdez when its oil spill occurred



88 quadrillion Btus



= total energy consumed in U. S. yearly



= 15 billion barrels of crude oil



= enough oil to cover a soccer field 230 miles deep



= fill 3,700 of the world's largest supertankers

= coal train long enough to reach to the moon and half way back

summer diesel grade 2 has a gravity of ±33 - ±37 which will give you about 140,000 to 137,500 btu of heat per gallon.

winter diesel grade 1 has a gravity of ±40 - ±44 which will give you about 135,800 to 133,500 btu of heat per gallon.



it shows quite well why winter diesel gives you less power, milage than summer fuel. it needs more fuel in the winter to produce the same amount of heat
