Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Bucking and shakes at light throttle

Buddy has a 1997 3500 cummins with auto 4x4, truck bucks and shakes at light throttle, transmission is a BD with all the goodies (new), has a banks powerpack system. He has heard the throttle position sensor posibly or maybe throttle springs . Anyone have a answer for this problem.

The throttle position sensor only has to do with the transmission, not the engine. The engine is completely mechanicaly operated.



Could be the throttle return springs.



Does the engine always do this, no matter the load? If so, what RPM range is he having the trouble in?

Mine does that under load with light return springs. Doubling the springs solves the problem. I return to the light springs when not pulling loads.

I'll chat with him today and post about rpm etc, he is going to put a different set of returns on so maybe that will do it. Thanks for talking to a Ford guy, I darn near bought a 99 Cummins when i got the ford , been regretting it ever since.

I talked to him today and he said it does it at all speeds amd all different rpm ranges,He ordered a new set of springs from dodge and they should be here today. Part numbers 4874476

mine does the same thing. are you guys doubling up with stock return springs or sourcing the second one from somewhere else? if so anyone willing to put up a part number for those of us who cant go to a parts stor? thanks

I had this problem also. Made a great excuse to floor it all the time as it was always smooth when floored. I just went to a local parts store and bought a generic return spring that fit over my existing one and cut it to length and put both of them on-original spring inside the new one. It might occasionally buck a bit but not nearly as bad and is much smoother and controllable. Cost bout a dollar to fix.

I looked at his springs and the parts guy gave him one small one with plastic on the end and one big one, he also gave him a different type and they are alot bigger than the previous big one and both the same size. I guess we will know soon which combination works.
