I've noticed that my truck bucks when backing up my new 5'ver. I can control it with the clutch, but would rather not resort to this if there is another solution. I never had this problem with my TT and it doesn't always happen with the 5'ver. Any suggestions.
 
easy fix

get yourself a custom shift knob from Bob Verhof and it will include a switch for your jake brake and also a switch for 2 wheel low range I have one and am very satyisfied, it was easy to install and one of my best bombs... ... ... ..... kevin

hey I just noticed you have a 2 wheel drive unit, so this will not help you :confused:

If it's like ours, it'll also go into a bucking fit taking off from a dead stop in 1st gear when towing the 5ver if you do any more than ease out the clutch at an idle, and only after the clutch is fully engaged can you roll into the throttle! :( It feels like the powertrain is rocking on the mounts.

Been a long time for me. My old Chevy truks with standard trannys used used to do that, and it was always a red flag that said, "rear main seal has leaked oil on the clutch disk". The symptom aways first appeared in reverse, then started to buck going forward under load. Was always a worsening process until I got the rear main fixed and replaced the clutch. Think I went through 3 iterations of that - two different trucks.



Hope there's a better explaination for you.

P. S. I guess an easier observation would be to look for busted motor mounts. I never had that but heard it can give similar symptoms.
 
I am going to take a stab at it and say it is the FE part of your SB clutch. It's like trying to use a fiber low HP clutch for racing, it doesn't work the best . It's the same thing using a race type high HP clutch in an application better suited for a stock fiber clutch.



I can testify to the bucking, it gets pretty tough backing a 5-er around a corner up hill, but what do you do?
 
Just a thought, but I wonder if a set of traction bars (like Steve St. Laurents') wouldn't help.



Today I put plywood sides on my 20' flatbed trailer and loaded it up with woodchips. When I pulled away, the tires were right on the verge of loosing traction. It made me feel how much the suspension was winding up as it as it would catch and slip.
 
My guess is you are getting rear spring wrap. Those long springs are pretty flexible and wrap up under heavy loads. Mine has an automatic trans and also bucks when backing my fifth wheel. It never does it if I am in low range. Track bars will probably cure it since they prevent spring wrap.

I too have a 99 5sp 4:10 Avion 5th wheel 38. 6ft way over loaded I have no problems now. When they mounted my hitch the did not tie to the frame correct,They had it drilled through the top of the frame,and run the bolts so they had to comprass the bed to the frame. That will never happen so the hitch moves and the truck jumps. It allso jumps like hell when you have to stop fast with ABS this is no fun. Check your mounts the hitch should have 4 brackets one on each corner tired to the frame with spacers between the hitch rails and the bed so there can be no movement

when the bolts are run tight to the frame brackets. ,make sure there is not 1/2 in boles in 5/8 in holes get the idea ,or the frame brackets don't have slots. If you like you can call me at 256 355 0249 be glad to talk this over. Clem:)
