Friend of mine is tired of his gassers. Selling 2 cars (durango, and something else). He's impressed with mine and wants to get a dodge diesel.

Budget $15,000 so this leaves out the 3rd gens for the most part.

I know of the basics to look for and ask about with the 2nd gens. Looking for some advice and some other things I may of missed.

I'm going to encourage a VP44 truck if we can track down a good one. Quad cab. Box size I do not think matters much to him. SRW and disk brakes on the back. 4x4. manual trans. So this limits me to 01. 5 to 02's.

So far, most of the trucks on ebay that meet this spec have just over 100,000 miles and texas trucks at that. Ironicly, in Feb. his work is sending him down there for training. :)

1. VP44. Ask if has been replaced, if so who?. Was the lift pump the cause? did they both get replaced if they had? If it has been replace, and the lift pump is in the tank. I figure we are good to go and not to worrie about this possible expense.

2. What years had the 53 block. I could look this up, but I'm sure in the 01. 5's and up this isn't hte case, just near the 98 and 99's if I recall correctly. If it's a 53 block, he will not buy.

3. 5 speed trans. Did the 5th gear nut fix ever get fixed correctly at a certain year?

4. Any front end things do I need to ask or look for? What about the front drive train?

I can't think of anything more. So I ask you experts :)

He wants to add a 100hp to the truck. I figure the Juice/Att would be perfect addition for this truck until he learns about diesels and all that. he comes from a ricer back ground if that says anything. But realizes the power that can be hard when he won't run his WRX with my truck :)

As far as mods after the fact. he'll be on his own, but I would like to help him get a good base truck to start out with.

I take it he is looking for a second gen. 24 valve? I see you made the reference to the edge juice/attitude and the lift pump and the injection pump. Is he considering a 12 valve at all ?

No. Something newer, with less potential miles, newer creature comforts, an extra transmission gear. I understand the P-pumped motors are good motors and all. but...

The thing is it's difficult to turn up a P-pump to make the power a chiped VP44 would with out changing alot of stuff. Stuff I know nothing about, (and the buddy even less). And from the bits and I've read, yeah, you can make 800hp with a 12 valve, but it's not going to be driveable like a vp44. granted I know very little about turning one, I'm just more familiar with the ideas of the tuneability of electronics then screws :)

Also, stock HP 98 12v vs stock 01. 5 HP.

But, not to rule them out based on inexperience and lack of knowledge, other then pride and loyalty you guys have for your trucks why should I look for a 12v?

Yeah, I understand, I was just trying to clarify. I own a 01. 5 and personally its been a great an awsome truck for me. Granted I only have 72,xxx miles on her currently, I have only done general care for it and its treated me well. Only problem I had with the truck is the water pump went up which on any motor, gas or diesel, happens. I also have a slight oil leak comming from where the vaccum pump meets the powersteering pump(common problem on the second gen 24 valves). Its a 28 dollar (don't quote me on the price) rebuild kit for the vaccum pump, so no biggy. Either way its been a great truck but if I had the money I would have a 12 valve to. :D Anyways, just tell your buddy to look around and do his research, he will find the a good truck that will fit him.

The ebay truck is a nice looking truck but quite frankly - I think 14. 5 is a lot for a 98 w/almost 200k on it. I think he can do better for the same $$ or a little more on an 01. 5 / up with less miles. MHO

Took me 6 months of looking to find mine. When I did it was in April 01, had 75k miles and was bone stock except for tires and shocks. I paid 18k for a two year old fully depreciated and not even broken in yet truck - good things come to those who wait for the right opportunity. once again MHO

It'll be tough finding a '01. 5 Quad Cab 4x4 for around $15K unless it has really high miles. I found mine about 14 months ago in Texas for $18500 that had 69K miles, and as soon as I had it trucked up here, I had a line of people offering me more than $20K for it. But I looked for about 6 months for this one and it's not going anywhere. I didn't think the price on that 12 valve on Ebay was all that out of line, although I'd rather be closer to $13 on that one. I will have one eventually...

Wouldn't happen to be yours, would it? :-laf

Yep ;) I jumped the fence and boght an 02 (which you never know, I might be persuaded to sell also :-laf ). I have a gut feeling I'm going to regret selling the 12er but I think I could use the $. There's actually a local sale pending for this eve... . We'll see...

That is one sweet a** truck... almost makes me want to get rid of my '01. 5. ALMOST! If I didn't already have one, I'd be on it like a fat kid on a cupcake :-laf . By this spring though, if you have a regular cab 4x4 12 valver in the stable you want to get rid of, I might be into flying out your way!

My brother just bought a 98. 5 CTD quad cab dually, 5 speed. It has 90k,leather, rhino lined, all factory options & looks showroom new inside & out. It has a jake brake, edge comp & turbo timer. It was owned by an older guy who used it to travel from W. V. to Florida. He was the original owner too. The guy put new tires on & said 15k cash deal. I would try to find a truck like this one before going to the dealer & getting hosed. If he has a month... . the deals are out there.
