I got a call tonight from a buddy of mine who has an '00 2500. He told me checked his oil and was 3 qts low. Also, the catch bottle was full to the holes. He says he only has about a thousand miles on the oil change. The truck did have an antifreeze leak last week, but he said temps never came up. His dad checked it out for him and he didn't think he had added alot of antifreeze to it. He says it runs just fine.

I wouldn't think the rings are shot, since if the motor had gotten hot enough to do any damage to the rings, you'd definitely know it. Any ideas?

You didn't say who changed the oil, but maybe whoever changed it didn't put all 12 quarts in it to start with.

When you say "the catch bottle was full" do you mean with oil?

If so, this sounds like a head gasket.

I got to thinking about it today, and I think I might know what happened. Last week, he ditched his truck. It was pointed straight into it and it was a pretty steep angle. I didn't look when I pulled him out, but do you think it could've lost the oil that way?
