I was wondering how much hp/tq you can get a 727 to hold and what is the price range with and w/out billet shafts? Thinking about doing a chevy ctd conversion and using the 727 and 205 case so the front drive shaft would drop on the correct side but was just wondering about that first before i go jumping into anything. thanks,

Lance

The books say the OEM shafts will hold 700 horsepower in a 3000-3400lb car. Anything more should have a hardened shaft. HP Books, Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook by Carl H. Monroe. It is one of the better publications in my opinion. I would recomend the FSM and The Handbook. Pressure test the trans to see if there are internal problem areas, put extra clutch packs in and steel planetaries and a real good torque converter and SFI flexplate.

My stock output shaft held put to 15psi boosted 4x4 launches,,,,, 20psi killed it tho. But there are alot of other goodies in my trans, that came from A & A trans. We are currently working on a billet output shaft for our transmissions it's been a very long ordeal and a lot of waiting but starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel and the shaft's should be done very soon. Currently they are the only shafts for our trans.

You can call A & A trans and talk to Rick I highly recommend thier products they are proven and well known in the 727, and 904's

Why use a 727 when the OD series of this transmission is so easy to get and build? A 1:1 final drive ratio with a decent rear end gearing is just not a daily driver friendly set up.

To make it roadable you would need a 2. 6 or 2. 7 rear end ratio and that is just ugly to contemplate.

If you are looking for something for a daily driver and multi-use have a 48RE or 48RH built.

well I was wondering this for two reasons. A friend of mine bought a 90' 4x4 and he plans to take it up pretty far in the hp range and it also has an 8 in. lift with 38's under it so he was wondering if he would need billet shafts(or if they are offered) and what a fully built transmission would cost. 2nd, I am thinking about doing a conversion on an 80's model chevy so i figured it would be easiest to use a 727/205 mate so the front driveshaft would drop on the correct side. Didnt know if I should try using that or didnt know if there was an adapter to couple a 205 t-case to a nv4500. Thanks,

Lance

A fully built 47RH with upgraded internals and custom lockup TC will run about $5k dependng on where you go. Pretty much bullet proof up to 700 HP/1000 ft/lbs. Will bolt up to an NP205 also.

Advance Adapters has the adapter for NV4500 to NP205 if thats the way you want to go.

I can build any type of chrysler transmission depending on your HP needs and how much you want to spend. Just pm me if anyone is interested and I will give you my phone number if you wanna talke to me.

I am interested in what you have done to your transmission for mods. Can you post or PM me?

Well,,,,,,

Red Frictions, and bands all the way, extra in the front drum

five pinion front planetary

four pinion rear planetary

billet servo pistons, upgraded servo spring and double retainer

Torrington bearings stem to stern

Upgraded pump

valve body

14 roller bolt in sprag

and a hand full of other little things, all work and parts came from A & A trans The trans holds up great, and takes a beating. The trans has been out for a while now, waiting on shafts, Input shafts and on the shelf the problem has been with output shafts no one offered a billet/hardened shaft for the 727's and Rick stepped up to the plate and went ahead with making some currently still working everything out and hoping to have my trans back together soon with shafts in it.

What band specifically are you using for the kick down band, a flex or solid? And what ratio apply lever and who's strut? Do you know what the actual length of your output shaft is/was and what shaft length is Rick having made? Were you racing this set-up? A lot of questions huh! Thanks in advance for sharing the info.

Sounds like the 727 can be built to hold some good power. I didnt know a 205 would bolt to a 47rh or re. If i do this conversion i just needed to use a 205 t-case to i was looking for ideas what it would bolt to. Thought the 727 would be a bit cheaper to build rather than a 47rh or re. thanks,

Lance

Nearly the same internals with the obvious exception of the OD tailshaft. Many internal parts will interchange. After talking with DieselTweaker I now know another benefit of a 518/618 or 47RH etc. would be shaft availability. If you have a 727, abuse it, break it and want to rebuild it, you may be surprised when it comes to shaft availability. I have seen used output shafts for the diesel 727 on ebay for close to 300. 00, these were good used shafts from a core supplier, not hardened ones. From what I understand the handfull of hardened shafts that exist for the diesel 727 are nearly $1000.

The expense on the billet shafts is much what I expected. The 727 really doesn't need a billet shaft due to no lockup and its general use in a gas application. They were never run much or intended for a diesel application.

Billet shafts and billet front drums are readily avalable for the 47/48 RH/RE models for around $400 per. :)

It's too bad the CTD's are bit different, the gasser drag racing crowd has all sorts of options for HD parts like hardened shafts, approx. 300-400. 00 bucks for them.

If I may ask where are you getting hardened shafts for the 47RH for $400. 00? 300M steel? I see one (47RH) in my future eventually.

Once Rick finishes the output shafts all had parts will be upgradeable for our 727's

Another nice piece out there is the one piece input shaft and hub from suncoast
