Built Transmission blown ?

I will do my best to keep this short as i can guys. I have about 6k miles on my built transmission it has had it easy so far just street driving no track action. i have been running my smarty on level 8 from day 1 after my break in time with not one problem . yesterday i was pulling my 16' lowboy semi-loaded got in some stop and go on the freeway and the Trans started getting a little warm. (South texas 96 outside)It always runs about 160-170 temp the same as the stock it got about 220 i was off on a side street went to make a right and it locked in 2 gear i let off then back on same thing. then it shifted i drove it to the house about 2 miles and it was fine. Got home and their was transmission fluid all under the left side under the turbo and trans pan blown all over the place. i check the level and found no loss on the dip stick. All cooler lines in good shape. now it drives fine on the freeway but once it gets warmed up the truck wont do 25 and jumps like crazy. Im sorry for the long post and hope you made it thru i just dont know anymore. gos to shop on warranty on monday. Any ideas ?

Yes, I have an idea, are you using the old style open element trans filter or the stock filter with the plastic housing on it? If you are using the older 727 type filter, on some applications it causes foaming, it did on mine. I had to go back to the original filter for our 48re's(probably the same for a 47re).



The foaming will make it shift harsh and act erratic, as far as the leak there is a small "breather/pressure"? hole on the upper left inside of the bell housing, if you are foaming or your level is too high it will force the fluid out this hole and make a mess like you are describing.



Get your truck on a level surface, and get a good reading on the dip stick, it doesn't take much too be overfull. Try draining about a pint, and test drive, when it is good and warm, pull the dipstick while running in neutral and check for foam. If there is foam, chances are they/you used the older type filter for more flow, and on some applications they just will not work. Just go buy a stock/factory filter for your 03.

You have a Suncoast transmission, no problem there, good choice.



Get your fluid at the correct level, I will hope your problems will be solved.

I have a Suncoast trans and live deep in south TEXAS (Corpus Christi) no problems, call the guys at Suncoast and they will answer any question you have. I was lucky enough to have Joe Webb himself set my truck up. I can't say enough about the guys at Suncoast.

I am happy with suncoast in every way i think some thing may not have been put in right . 2-3 has always felt alittle funny and thats were my prob is we will see mon thanx for all the help guys. Its good to have such a nice family such as TDR for help. Andrew

Just thought i would give an update if anyone cared. Droped by the shop today an they had it out and on the table broke down. They said all the bands were burnt up an they seem to think it loss line psi some how. They did not say much so thats all i know. he said they are sill looking in to it and would give me a call i would sure like to know what caused it. Kind of scares in the way of im out of a truck/job for now im kind of slow so its a good time but i dont have time for it to be in and out of the shop all the time. Im having second thoughts about what i have done to my daily driver.

Your truck did the same thing as mine did. it got hot and puked out fluid allover the engine bay. I am surprised there was no fire as I know the turbo was hot! Anyway, we think the TC was not locking up for some reason and down she went. Sorry for your loss and trouble. On the bright side... my truck is now better than ever after the rebuild.

Do you guys have the shift enhanser modules on your trannys? Could this cause overheating?

I have no shift module of any kind. Just my smarty , well we know it loss line psi they seem to think the vb was not set to full psi and the trans got starved and it just went down hill from there should be out today so we will see. as for the fire i never even smelt anything burning i thought that was kind of odd myself.
