Just bought a new built auto transmission and installed it about two weeks ago. I'm not going to say a brand right not to keep the flames down, but had the full transmission with Billet Input, Billet Intermediate, and HD 3rd gear clutches.

I went to my first pull today and almost at the full pull mark, the motor free spools like nothing is connected. I figure it's the flexplate or output as they are about the only thing I declined to purchase. I get pulled off the track and put it in park. People in front say sparks came from up at the front. On parking the truck doesn't hold in park. This got me confused. After getting disgusted and pulling it home, I notice transmission fluid is dripping onto the trailer from what looks like the dust cover below the flywheel.

Besides pulling the dust cover to see about the flywheel, what else should I check before talking to the transmission builder?

Thanks for the help, but until talk to the transmission guy, I was thinking that starting the motor is bad if there's possible metal shavings.

Is this correct?

A planetary doesn't hold park.

If Park isn't holding I'd have to guess it's the output shaft. I'd pull the OD section down before you pull the rest of it.

Would an output shaft cause the fluid leak near the torque convertor?

It shouldn't.

A leak up that direction would Probably be something unrelated.

A leak in the front would have to be either the torque converter seal or the front pump seal.

If the output shaft broke, could metal shavings have messed up a seal? I was told by the builder that the output couldn't harm anything if it let go.

Update:

I talked to the transmission builder last night and he talked to my shop this morning. He's confident that the output went out due to park not holding, but the leak below the torque convertor has him puzzled. Since leaving it Saturday night it's got about a foot and a half diameter puddle of ATF below it not counting what drained previously.

Went back to the shop last night and learned a little more. Aparentally when the output shaft let go power had to go somewhere so it busted my flexplate and somehow caused a leak up by the torque convertor.

When the flex plate went out it may have taken out the pump. That's what happened to mine when the truck was still completely stock.

Wow! Glad you found everything! I'm guessing the Flex Plate was on it's way out... and the output snapping was enough shock to do it in.
