I'm looking for 500-550 hp. Reliable daily driver, great towing machine that can be run hard. I don't want to worry (unduly) about breakage. I can do it with my 7. 3 or I can convert to cummins, cost more to build the 7. 3 but how much to convert? What would I need to do to the new common rail to make it bulletproof?

Welcome to TDR!

You may have more luck asking in the Cummins/Diesel Conversion forums.

But since you asked, you're not going to do that reliably with a 7. 3. 450 tops.

Definitely convert to a Cummins.

I am putting down 450 or so with my 2001 Powerstroke, but I bought a Common Rail Cummins because I wanted to get crazier. On my Ford, I did pretty much everything you could--injectors, intercooler, ball bearing turbo, headers, intake, exhaust, chip, pushrods, headstuds. It was reliable, but also noisy and I can do better MPG with a Cummins.

I am also selling my Ford. want to buy it?

hope this helps, PM me if you have any more questions

Thank you, I am familiar with Fordcummins.com. What I am trying to learn is just what needs to be done to the cummins to make it bullet proof, ie; fuel system-lift pump, injectors etc. I've also heard about sleeves being sucked in at elevated hp.

Get yourself a HPCR, preferably an '03-'04. They seem to have less injector issues.

Then a nice single or preferably twins, head studs, a FASS with the Industrial Injection 2-micron filter setup, some F1 Injectors and cam, a TS MP-8 and call it good. Don't forget to back that thing up with a nice auto.

If I get new injectors anyway... does it still matter if it's an 03' or an 04'? or would an 05' be ok? What is an TS MP-8? I have a 6 speed  Do you have any suggestions on a reputable company that can build this engine? Thanks for all the info I know just enough so far to get myself in trouble!

If you REALLY want a bullet proof engine at 500+ HP find yourself a p-pumped 12V and build it. If you want the niceties of electronic boxes to change power levels on the fly, quieter engine, etc, get a 600 series HPCR motor.

There are major differences between the 03-04 and 04. 5-up motors in ECU programming, injectors, and electronic boxes. The 05 610 motor is probably the best for reliability at stock levels but at the level you want it will require some major upgrades.

Unless you have money just burning a hole in your pocket and a bunch of time, trade the Ford for a Dodge and be done with it. :)

I want the best of both worlds. Prefer quieter with niceties :D I have money... just want to know what mods the the 05' would need to make it totally reliable and a reputable business to build it. I would rather keep my Ford, just want to put a real engine in it ;)

From what I've seen the only reliability problem is the transmission. I saw an 04. 5 the other day do 415 on a day that the dyno seemed to be showing low that had a built ATS Transmission, TST, CP3, and an EZ. Power level doesn't seem to be hard to attain.

studs, twins, FASS or equivalent (mine is the parent AirDog), and a single TST box will do 500+ with stock injectors. 6-speed NV5600.

Scheids, Industrial Injection, Floor It diesel for builders, among others.

Injectors: II 3-Flows or Don M's Flux injectors

Turbo: II SPS 64/66

Fuel: FASS or AirDog and Stage I CP3

Boxes: TST R49 and a MP8/EZ/PS Remote

Other: Studs, valve springs, and possibly fire ring

Small list of a possible solution. Substitute your favorite piece in any area. Add a good converter and a built transmission and have fun. ;)

if you have the money, and want a REAL engine, quit playing with these toy's and get a dt466 shoved under the hood. power, true reliability and not just another conversion.

Max output 300hp... aftermarket availability? Oo.

you make a very good point about aftermarket avail. not as much info around as there is for the 5. 9,but depending on years of the engines, they are setup like one another. the 466 is very pop with the tractor pullers up north, from what i have read on postings 1200hp is very doable without any lowerend mods. seems i have read about folks gettin well over that with various fuels and mods. diesel garage is a good site to find more info on the subject. forgive me for not answering the original question,if a commonrail 5. 9 suites you,the first mod for gettin power is a upgrade turbo,as mentioned 12 v is the easiest and cheapest route. but if i had the time and coin,a 466 would be my pick!
