I just replaced my 4" exhaust with a Bully Dog 5" exhaust and thought I would post my initial observations.

The biggest gain I have seen so far is the reduced turbo cooldown time required prior to shutdown. With summer approaching my egt's just seemed to hang around 400*-450* (pre-turbo) for quite a while. Now the temps drop below 400* rapidly and in no time are below 350*. This is great for me because I hate sitting waiting for the turbo to cool.

As far as the sound goes it really sounds sweet! The truck has that big rig throaty sound now:). The "in the cab" noise level appears about the same as with my 4" system, no drone though.

Now as for performance gains I really can't say for certain. I have not dynoed with it to get an accurate # for the exhaust enhancement.

The system was a breeze to install. Quality and fit of the system are as good as any 4" I have seen. When I first unpacked the system I didn't see how that huge muffler and piping was going to fit, but it all went in with out any hitches. So if any of you are considering a new exhaust system for your truck I would recommend checking out this setup.

Unbelievable that they can bend a 5 inch pipe around the axle. Thanks for the post Jetpilot... ..... if you get some dyno #'s, try to post them. Good luck.

Jetpilot, a few questions, if you don't mind.

⌂ Does it use the original hanger scheme?

Is it five-inch from the turbo back?

Is the muffler 5"?

Are there any frequencies at which it resonates?

Thanks,

Jim

Special thanks to sponsors ????

never noticed that before in your sig.

now i know why you just laugh when you bust stuff up !!!

egt's lower with the hammer down ??

Ethdee,

Yes, the system uses the original hanger scheme.

As for what part is 5", it uses a normal 4" downpipe and then a small expander pipe to go from 4"-5". All the rest is 5" this includes the muffler. As for the question does it resonate I am not a good one to ask... . Been around too many airplanes. Heck I didn't think my 4" resonates but I read here about other members who have this problem so I hate to comment.

Iceman,

I can't say for sure that the 5" lowered my egts. I have only had it on a couple days. Also that is such a subjective area... . As I stated above my turbo cool down time has decreased so I would assume my egt's would decrease somewhat at WOT. But with everything on max my egt gauge is pegged!

Chipstien,

It sure sounds deeper to me. Sounds like a big rig! The best I can describe it is it sounds like the trucks with 5" stacks. I know that may sound dumb (being it should because of pipe size) but just trying to give you an idea.

A friend has MIG welding equipment and experience, so I talked him into helping me assemble and install a 5" exhaust system last March. The HX55 is set up for 5" so I thought it worth trying. There is only about 1/8" clearance for the pipe to pass the frame and bellhouisng area. I am using Walker mandrel bends, straight section, and 21835 muffler. I too noted quicker cooldown, maybe a bit lower egts, and lots more noise. Is this last feature a downside  :D On the dyno, the pressure, heat, and noise coming out of that pipe are incredible. A friend noted you could still see the gases swirling at the outlet, when the snorkel system was not attached to vent the exhaust.

5" isn't for everyone, and few Rams could benefit from it in the hp department, but it sure is wilder than a 5" chrome tip Oo.

dang I thought TJ said 4inch was the BOMB

what am i gonna do with this 5 inch exh:{ :{ :{

btw turbo to tail full 5inch

I'm running 5" from the turbo back with no muffler. It seems quieter than some of the 4" systems I heard at may madness during the dyno runs and the tone was much deeper. There is a drone that starts about 2200 rpm on up. Might have to add a muffler eventually.

I agree OO,my 5in has no muffler and while pulling kat's truck back from may maddness it was a bit much around 2200 rpm. I still love it :D I may put on a borla 5in race muffler to tone it down just a wee bit, mainly for when the camper is in back and the fam damily is in the truck:D

that's cool JetPilot---yea a 5" system from the turbo back with no muffler idles quieter than the Jardine 4" IMO, but slap some rpm's to her and that big rig sound is pounding out the back side--got to love it----chris

The first time I stood on it in a tunnel a car 200 feet in front of me tried to pull over. It sounded like 3 harleys being chased by a jet airplane. I had the windows rolled down to get the full effect and just about blew my eardrums out. :D

I've been running 5" for about the last year. I haven't noticed the drone some of you are talking about. To those who are interested in a 5" system, I was able to build mine for about $150 (no muffler). That includes 45's, 90's and a long sweep 90 to get over the axle and and turned out the back. You can find all the parts at most "big rig" shops.

As for sound, it's unreal on the dyno. The first time I dyno'd my truck with the 5" I was amazed. It literally rattled my insides.

I tried a 5 in. straight pipe from my 3 in. downpipe back and it has an "extra loud" crackle noise at around 2000-2200 RPM's. Have you guys with the straight piped 5 in. noticed this? Other than that it sounded real good!
