I am trying to decide on turbos and am looking for feedback from current or past owners of this HX40/HX35 turbo - My train of thought was a Nasty9 then a PDR HX35, but I'm thinking either improvement won't satisfy me or leave me room to grow. I do alot of towing and lower speed driving so I'm not sure if I'm ready to give up the quicker spool of the smaller exhaust housing - and I know DD 2's are coming at some point.

The Nasty9 is around $450 with my turbo being used, the PDR HX35 at $995 and Bully dogs HX40/HX35 at $925.

Thanks in advance - Eric Lee

I think its an awesome turbocharger for a set of twins I think it would have problems in your application, because the drive pressures will be higher in your application. The reason is a smaller drive wheel is pushing a bigger load.

Your breaking my heart - but I'm listening. My EGT's are quite managable with the set up I have. Coming home tonight up a medium grade I put the pedal down till I had 30 psi boost and left it there to watch the EGT's, they stayed at 800 - 850 till I let off to turn. I was in a good gear with the motor just under 2000 rpm. Even towing I stay cool and have alot of usable power with the HY35. I guess I'm like many here - just wanting more - Thanks for the input - Eric

I'll give you some input.

See my profile, I was wanting a better spool-up, but didn't want to loose the top-end power. ( have your cake and eat it too, thing ).

I tried a hx35/14 and it solved the spool-up but ran too hot for playing and was slower above 2300-2400.

so the hx 40 went back on and some mach 5 injectors.

Had to turn the box down to 1-1. Now it spools nice, still controls temp very well,(on this box setting) but will give light smoke all thru the rpm range if the throttle is very far ahead of the tach.

I should add that I run a rubber mat in the bed and now slide the tool box back if accelerating moderate or more!! She will run!!

As far as mileage goes, it lost some mpg around town, not sure about highway, if it changed it is not a lot.

I am looking it twins, most likely with the stock hy on top.

In my opinion, a hx40 turbo needs fuel, so plan on 100hp injectors.

Fox - If your planning on using the stock HY on top what for the bottom? I really don't want smoke, could this be a set up I could use also? Eric

I like my PDR35/14 a lot - great for towing, high boost at low rpm. The response is like the hx35/12. WOW, it was $650 when I got mine! Craig

For the prices you have listed I would look at an HX40/16 wastegated. That will give you more room for future expansion. A new HX40 can be found for around $850.

If you have the fuel to spool the HX40/16 up thats fine but if you are still running close to stock execpt a fueling box... your egts may run hotter! When I went with the #10 plate and governor springs. . I thought that I had better move up from my non wasted 14 housing to a non wasted 16 to handle the extra fuel.

Not only did my exhaust temps get much hotter, the lag of the bigger housing was very noticeable. I have tuned most of the lag out and moved the plate back to help with the egt. But I also have a wastegated 14cm housing sitting at home to replace the 16. I didnt even tow my big trailer with the 14cm housing first to see if it would handle it. The 16cm housing is even ported and polished to help it flow more air. I just dont push enough air to spool the turbo. .

If you are only seeing 850* egts pulling a hill with the trailer on ... . my suggestion would be the PDR HX35/14cm wastegated housing. With this setup. . it will handle what you have now and even the DDII's. I know that it will handle a Edge EZ,DDII's because my wifes 2k has this turbo on it now. It even has a wastegated 12cm housing on it. . We bought it setup like this from a man that used it to tow a 29' 5th wheel!

Bigger is not always better!!!!! Efficient is better!!!!

Eric Lee, I am still gathering info and have not decided on the bottom turbo.

I like the Piers set-up. May build my own.
