Getting ready to leave for Alaska in a few days... Discovered a vertical crack running from the top center of the windshield to about four inches from the bottom. It was not there when I washed the truck a few days earlier ... No pits or dings. I think I'll swing by Dave Smith Motors where I purchased the truck and see what happens with their service department.

Just put another one in my '03 last week, picked up a rock about 1/4" from the top. . right in the center! Oh well, another $200 write off on the company!!;)

Take a ball point pen and use it to follow the crack. If it has a chip even a really small one you'll find it doing this. I've done this many times. All but 5 or so in 25 years had a chip to the amazement of vehicle owners, sales managers new and used.

My 05 did this... the crack was on the inside of the windshield and you could feel it with a fingernail... . One day it wasn't there, the next day it was, while the truck sat in the sun... .

The dealer wouldn't help...

When the glass company came to change it... Safelite, they do all our trucks for around 135 each... . the installer found a lack of sealer/adhesive and felt the glass was under stress, thus the crack on the inside!!!

I than called the dealer back and offered to show them the windshield (Dishman Dodge) and the body shop foreman wasn't interested... . it was out of warranty and that was it... .

Flyfishing... . I hope you do better with Dave Smith... . and run your finger on the inside and see if you can feel the break... .

Jelag, Did exactly what you stated. I removed the cover from the carport in preperation for the trip. Lots of sun... Next few days the crack appeared. The crack is on the inside.

Thanks for the "heads up" .

Thanks again, Richard

Its covered under the basic warranty if defective or a thin spot in the urethane. Sometimes you can't tell until its removed if it is a thin spot of urethane and glass and metal hit. MOST are caused by rock chips.
