Bio-Desiel?????!!!

I just ran across this on the greasel.com site:

"Which diesels work the best with vegetable oil?

Direct injection, Indirect injection, Common rail, VE, Rotary inline, unit injectors, Computer controlled, We have tried and tested them all. With only a few exceptions, we have found through extensive field tests, that most any diesel will burn vegetable oil as long as it has been converted properly. Currently, the only vehicle we recommend against is the 1998. 5 thru 2002 Dodge Cummins pickups that have a VP44 injection pump. The GM 5. 7 and the Volvo diesel are 2, that while there are no problems with the convertibility of them, have a less than perfect track record as far as overall reliability. Other than the afore mentioned vehicles, we can convert your diesel. "

Now that "is" discouraging! Most of the biodiesel/WVO web-sites recommend against using straight veggie oil in a direct injected engine. Especially those with a Bosch rotary pump.

I think the best (cheapest) way to go is to use well filtered WVO and mix it with D#2 at something less than 10% or so (90% diesel fuel/10% WVO). That will save you 10 cents on the dollar and there's no need to purchase a conversion kit. You'll be saving money on the first fill-up.

From what I've read... higher percentages of WVO will cause long term problems in a direct injected engine. There's been a lot of research done on diesel engines running veggie oils. Some of those tests had to be stopped after 300 hrs (or less) because of engine failures.

I've been keeping my use of waste oil (veggie or used engine oil) to under 5%. . more like 2%. . just enough to lubricate the VP44. So far (70K miles) so good. Still on the OEM lift pump. Did have to change a fuel filter early (7K miles) once while using used engine oil. The engine started to hesitate pulling a load up hill. If the use of waste oils is going to cost more than it's worth. . I'm going to stop using it.

I'm looking into doing the same. I ran a lot of used engine oil thru my '01, I'd say about 15 gallons, no issues at all with the pump (never more than 2 gallons per tank).

My game plan on running WVO is installing an coolant/fuel heat exchanger in the fuel line just before the lift pump, then an electric heater between the filter and injection pump for quick warmup when starting. I plan to run no more than 30% WVO (mixed with diesel). Not going to do the 2-tank thing.

Did the two tank thing-running like a sewing machine-no loss in power. I just smile when going buy the Pilot. 10,000 miles-thanx to the Fish camp & chinese rest. Both onlyuse high quality Peanut oil-looks like new rotella when filtered.

So there's no "problems" that crop up when mixing SVO and #2 if the percentage is kept low (<10%)?

Any particular veggie oil "better" than others? I suppose it would be useful to use one with a viscosity closer to #2.

SVO will "fry" a VP

I was considering doing a Greasel conversion on my '01. Emailed the guys at Greasel and they said the fuel (SVO) temp. needed to get the desired viscosity of SVO will fry the electronics of the VP. I guess that's would make it a deep fried VP. Needless to say, I'm not converting my '01. I guess I'll have to get a 3rd generation. Darn.

it'll void your warranty on a 3rd gen... not sure if I'd risk it on a computer controlled truck... though I guess the CP pump is supposed to be stronger than the VP.

I'd just cook up some bio and not worry about it.

I've Just Bought A 92 Extra Cab, 4x4, Auto With Tw0 12 Gal. Aux. Fuel Tanks. I Ran About 10 Gals. Of Unheat Wvo In It Just To See If It Would Run On It. It Ran Just Fine. With It Being Direct Inj. I'v Ordered A Heat Exchanger From Frybyrd And A 12 Volt Inline Fuel Heater From..... i Can't Rember Right Now But If You Must I'll Get If For Ya. Would Like To Hear From Ya To See How You Have Set Up Your Truck. I'm Already A Frequent Fryer With A 84 And 92 Mb.

Thanks
