I drive 60 miles one way to work. On the trip home and getting into stop and go traffic, I have smoke coming out of my truck and a strong burnt oil smell. I think the smoke is coming from the tail pipe, can't really pinpoint it. I usually notice it when stopped at a traffic light, or when I park and let it cool down at home. It doesn't do it every time and I've never noticed it when arriving at work of the morning, still letting it run a bit to cool the turbo. Is there any way the turbo could let oil past a seal at low to no boost pressure and contain the oil going down the highway at 7 to 12 pounds boost? I don't seem to be loosing engine oil. I usually change at 5-6000 miles and never have to add before the change. I would like to hang on to this truck for a while. It has 158000 miles on it and I've owned it since new.
 
If you not loosing oil then its likely not the turbo.

Whne you say burnt oil smell do you mean like oil spilles on a hot manifold and burning or as in an engine burning oil? If you seeing smoke bluish white smoke out the tail pipe and there ar eno obvious leaks on the engine, think injectors and proceed on that route.
 
Where is the smoke coming from? If its somewhere towards the rear end it could be your wheel seal leaking and the oil burning off of your rotor when you apply the brakes. Ive had this happen to my truck. The wheel seals on these axles are common to need replacing around your mileage.
 
Well, I don't know if the smoke is coming from a leaking rear wheel/axle seal, but I do have one leaking bad enough to wet the rotor on the drivers side. I will eliminate that possibility and see if the smoking and smell stops. I knew I had one weeping, but now it is leaking. Thanks for the replies!

Pull your intake and charge air tube, see if there is any oil present in either one, or around the turbo blades. When I lost my turbo I only witnessed blueish white smoke after idling at a stoplight then accelerating, never while traveling down the highway, even though oil pressure would be higher forcing more oil past the seals/bushings, I just could not see it. I also had no measurable oil consumption, however I'm sure had I allowed it to continue to disintegrate, oil use would have happened.

Keep a watch on your tailpipe for oil dripping out, also check your turbo oil return line, make sure it's not kinked or obstructed in any manner.
