my 03 has this aweful burnt oil smell in the cab when idling and sitting still. when i start to move it goes away. is this caused by the large tube extending down below the engine? is there any way to stop this from coming in?

originally i thought it was due to the "new" engine but now with 20,000 miles it is still there.

thanks, gary

it does it all the time. wether i change the oil or not. been doing it since day one. my 93 CTD didnt have this smell that i recall.

Hmm, it might be the brand of oil your using. Some oils are more prone to it. Rotella is one that holds an odor for a while. But yes you are right the smell is most likely cooming from the blowby tube that hangs down. Most brands put off the odor when the oil is fresh, but it usually goes away after 500-1000 miles. Try switching to a different brand of oil.

I have the same problem with my '04. 5 "600". It has 900 miles and if you stand around the front half of the truck while the engine running, you smell a gawd awful burnt oil smell. Smells like and old POS with multiple oil leaks running onto the hot exhaust.

I don't consider it a problem. I love the smell and if I'm carting around someone who doesn't like the smell I just turn the knob to recycle air (as opposed to fresh air) and I don't smell it. I really smell it right after a PM. I use Delo 400.

i do exactly like kklepfer. in fact, when the heat is on, i instinctively turn to recirculate as soon as the truck comes to a stop. this fixes the problem completely. i still believe it is because the exhaust fumes are carried over the truck to the cowl area where the air intake is. when sitting at a light, if there is someone in front of you, watch what direction their exhaust blows. if it blows towards the front or from right to left of the vehicle, that is when i get the odor.
