Anyone heard of an out of state vehicle visiting Calif. being busted for no Catalytic Converter ? Just heard that story today.

There was a thread here a few weeks ago concerning roadside checks in CA. I can't seem to find it for you at the moment.

I just spent several weeks in Northern CA and didn't see any such activity during my vacation. I'm sure that someone living in the area will be able to give you more information.

I am pretty sure with big trucks now you have to meet EPA regs as well as certain things for fuel efficiency like low rolling resistance tires to enter the state.

My 03 was just smogged and it never has a cat.
I believe if you"re legal in your state of registration, no one else can impose their laws on your veh.

I suppose if the smoke machine were up and running, a cel phone call might get the truck pulled over. Just guessing here, but everybody and their Prius driving cousins can call in a world of hurt for a truck with excessive smoke. Meshing in with dward's comment.

During the two years I had two CTD's in Commradfornia, (the 04. 5 & 07 C&C) I was contacted by SCAQMD, and was told that I had to submit a written plan on how I was to convert my trucks to a DPF system by 2013. That fleets had to be converted in Commradfornia by then and I was required to submit a written plan for financing or paying for the conversion. (and I thought we were a free Nation) I made a phone call and explained I was not a commercial entity, and I don't have a fleet of trucks, I just happen to have two CTD's, because my wife wanted to keep both. I was told that I still had to submit the letter. I told the female on the other end that she must have her wires crossed, that I'M NOT A FLEET and I would not do so. I never heard from them again, but I did sell my 04. 5 to my brother before the cutoff date they had imposed on me.

I know that there are many Comrades here in Commradfornia that have more than one 07 MY and earlier CTD's, did any of you get this letter?

Lived here all my Life and I've Never been pulled over for inspection or anything other then getting a ticket for speeding a few yr's ago all this BS about road side inspection is just that BS Drive like your a Idiot and yes they may pull you over and Look but drive like a senseable person and you won't have any Problem's . Ca. Is what you make of it be it good or be it Bad this State is no worse then any Other in the Country . Act Like a Fool Everyone is going to be looking .

If you have a "modern" truck and you're blowing smoke they CAN pull you over as a gross polluter. Same as the gas rigs if they are behind you and they can't breathe because of your tailpipe emissions (we're all been behind one of these beaters).
As for check points, there is only the DUI stops that I've seen.

I got a courtesy letter decades ago when driving an old Ford with worn rings. It smoked like a banshee and someone turned me in. I deserved it. Letter came from the Air Pollution Control Board. We used to get bombarded by smog from LA when I was growing up here, but it's way better now.

Amazing how your nose can pick out a carburetored these days. We've come a long way from the "good old days".

Most vehicles with a carb have long rotted away here. But, last week in downtown Sacramento, I got behind a ~'67 GTO. Car was nice, but I could definately smell it. I can't believe that we were all used to that for so many years.

As a commercial driver driving a commercial truck in CA I was stopped because the exhaust stack faced out from the cab at 90% and that it was in a height that was not legal... . low and behold the CHP officer showed me the regs in the Federal Motor Carrier Regs... . seems that a exhaust stack has to be below a certain height or above a certain height so that if you pull along side a school bus you can't blow exhaust into an open window... I shared that the truck was built that way... it was at that time almost 10 years old and had been trough at least 2 or 3 weight station inspections a month for the past several years..... he issued a warning and we never fixed it...

I've seen a lot of commercial inspections at the scale house in a lot of states but have never seen an out of state personal vehicle pulled over for an inspection... . I can't imagine they can enforce a CA regulation on a vehicle licensed in another state... .

My Yamaha Rhino is licensed for on and off road use in AZ... (one plate but 2 stickers) and I was stopped in my home state of WA... . I said it was a legal vehicle an that the reciprocity agreement between states should mean he had to honor the plate... He called in and found that he had to honor the road plate issued by AZ and let me go.....

So that's my story...

Jim

seen them many times, they throw them up anytime they want to check cars in the area. also seem stops for off road fuel or home made fuel that you didnt pay taxes on. we are not free, they feed off us like bizzards here in sacramento ca

A Sunoco station near me in Chambersburg still sells 112 octane leaded gas for $8. 69/gallon. I use it as an admixture is several of my old Gravely tractors that don't have hardened valve seats.
