I have found a truck I like and it looks to be very clean, but it has 254K miles on it. They seem like they are all highway miles, but I am not sure. It's a '01 2500 4x4 ext cab 5sp. I am too far away from it to just go and take a look, but the salesman says its tight. It's up around the DFW area. I am wanting to know what things to look for to know whether or not I'd be getting a good truck?

pull a carfax and ask for all maintenance records. if its been kept up--dont let the mileage scare you. check to see if the beds been modified for gooseneck or fifthwheel--that'll tell you if its been a tow rig or not. check for leaks, rust, shocks, everything. ensure all gauges, lights, t-case, etc work. these trucks will last a long time if taken care. good luck.

Post for a TDR member in the DFW area if they could look at the truck for you. Ask them to look very carefully for signs of it being in the Katrina flooding. There was web site on ways to look for signs of flooding, like backing out screws to look for rust and looking at electrical wire connections. Don't buy till it's been checked out with a fine tooth comb. Good luck.

Well, I've found another truck in Huntsville for a little cheaper with much less miles on it. I'm close enough to drive and check it out, so Sat. I'm gonna go look. They guy said the VP44 was just replaced (sounds familiar). It has 143K miles. Thanks for the idea on checking electrical connections and backing screws out. Any other things I should check for, such as major problem areas that will cost $$ to repair?
