A friend here in Nebraska is wanting a truck now. He has an 11sec Eclipse, but after he rode in my truck at the track hes hooked. Talking it over for a few weeks hes settled on the 98 12v Quadcab, transmission doesn't matter.

The truck hes found so far is about 199 miles away and has 126k on it. They want 16,800 for the truck and claim its in great shape. I told him thats a reasonable deal.

I briefed him on the KDP, and also on the auto transmission "situation". My knowledge on the 12v is limited, so I am asking for anything to "look for" when inspecting the truck.

Thanks for the help... ...

Yep :) lots of 2wd trucks available.

But he wants 4x4 Quad Cab 12v ... ... ... everything else is "flexable", the hes found so far is a nice looking rig from the pictures I have seen.

Stuff to check in random order:

Starter contacts... . sorta hard to inspect on a test drive

shutdown solenoid, wiring, etc..... easy to check

HVAC functionality..... easy to check

turbo wear... . easy to check

blow-by..... easy to check

fluid leaks..... easy to check... . check 'smells/levels' of all the vitals

front end parts wear..... easy to check

body damage/rust... . bottom of doors is a hotspot

fan clutch... . easy to check

check for radiator corrosion... . easy to check

hoses, serp. belt, etc... ... no brainer

It would be sweet to have a '12-valve Guy/Gal' check it out for him... . that way they could drive it to see if it has any out-of-the-ordinary quirks.

Not sure how often these happen, but this is what I've had to do to mine.

1. Rear pinion seal

2. Rear axle seals

3. Likely it needs brake shoes/pads

4. I had the dealer replace the seal behind the gear case. $1900:{

Other than that it's an excellent truck. I pull my 4 horse trailer a lot, so I expect some ware and tear. I saw a '98 12 valve for sale around here recently, if I can get onto that web site, I'll post the link. For some reason it's down right now.

a stupid tip:

check the door compartments on the inside. if they're really clean, then you know that the previous owner was meticulous (like me). if that even matters...

As much as I like autos, and personally would not own one, I would honestly go with a 5 spd, just because it is cheaper to bomb, and you can get away with mild bombs w/o a new clutch... Just a thought... I know with an auto, you have to do all kinds of stuff, but to each their own...
