Got a chance to buy a 97' 2500, Auto, 4x4. The truck has 220k on it, had the auto trans rebuilt about 2k ago. The owner says he was pulling a trailer and the water pump went out and engine locked up on him. So whats an engine running and whats involved with changing it out {unbolt & disconnect the old one and put the new one in} or do I have to worry about ecm/pcm's etc. ? Any help and advice would be appreciated, thanks!

a 12 valve should be a straight across swap no electronics. before you get into it too deep i would look at rebuilding the engine thats in there. if it locked up for overheating maybe all it needs is new rings bearings and pistons. if the cyl walls are pretty badly damaged you might have to machine them and then your talking big money. this is just food for thought. remember a good used engine is about 2k and its used 2k into the engine you have might just about be a complete overhaul and then you have a reman. again something to think about

What's the price and condition (other than the bad engine)? No engine computer in a 12V truck, so no worrries there. Only computer is for the auto trans. Engines are $1000-$2000 used, or $4000-$5000 with installation labor to rebuild.

I got my truck from a friend a year ago, paid $7500. Aside from the usual failing paint and cracking dash, I got a short block with ~40K, a DTT Trans with ~25K and a few other cool parts (total cost, way more than I paid for the truck), all installed in a clean, straight, good-driving SLT ext cab truck. If your opportunity sounds similar or better, I'd say buy it.
