Buying Out of State

I live in Calif. and am considering buying a new 3500 HO, not available in CA. I would like to go to Phx or LV to purchase it. What are the ramifications re: emissions, taxes etc... anyone have experience at this?

From what I have heard you would be better off to buy out of state and keep it registered out of state until able to "bring it in" as used. Do you know anyone out of state that you could use their address? I plan on doing that soon myself where as I too live in Cal. I ordered a 2003, 4x4, SO, 47RE auto and picked it up at Thanksgiving. Its been in the shop four times for the trans. DC is buying it back - lemon law. :{ I wanted the HO with the 6 speed but settled for the next best thing. WRONG MOVE. Not again. My brother lives in Colorado and I'm gonna keep it registered there until I can bring it in as used. Oo.

If you happen to get pulled over by a policeman, what are you going to say when he asks why your residence is in CA and yet your truck (with out of state plates) is registered to you at a CO residence?? Years back I was for a short time working in CA and got pulled over because of my out of state plates. I caught all sorts of heck when the officer found out I had been working and living in the state of CA for more than 30days and had not registerd my vehicle in CA. According to him as soon as I was employed and had a residence there I was considered a Californian. Another question which comes to mind is what are you going to tell your auto insurance when they ask all their questions regarding residence where truck will be parked, etc.



Just seems like there is a certain degree of risk or potential hassles involved here. I'm not sure but you would think the state of CA would be wise to folks purchasing "restricted" vehicles in neighboring states and registering them there until they had enough mileage on them to be re-register in CA as used. But then again maybe they don't care so long as they recieve thier share of the pie ($$) in registration fees, taxes, etc.

I am being serious, too. I have an employee who has been working here since August of last year, came in from Las Vegas. She just got ticketed last week for NOT having registered the car in California after seeking gainful employment. Unless someone tipped them off, I have no idea how they caught her. She had already changed her DL over to CA. She is now in a heap of trouble at DMV and is facing fines. If you are caught harboring (AKA screwing) the DMV you can be heavily fined. Yes I know people do it all the time, I'm just letting you know that someone is looking for these kinds of things.



However, it can obviously be done. From what I know:



If you are talking about just flat out buying oneout of state and bringing it into to CA traight accross, forget about it, it isn't gonna happen. I'd be surprized if they'r even sell it to you. The dealerships are being warned about this too.



As stated earlier, you NEED to have an instate residence to purchase it and register it to. Then the truck MUST have at least 7000 on the clock before it will be considered used by DMV. I am not sure if there is a definite "time", but I remember hearing 6 months. I do know for sure about the 7K mile rule.





The vehicle will not be required to meet CA emissions at this point, as it is a used vehicle being brought into the state. You will be responsible for DMV fees, as well as Tax. Get out the wallet, it won't be cheap.

Hey there Elite 1 better be carefull. The peoples republic of California considers what you are talking about as a fruad against the state. Sometime back they (Ca) started using the DMV computer to compare vehicle reg. info in other states with licensed drivers in Ca. and is doing so have bagged thousands of such registration cases. The fines and back registration fees can get very high. The police are constantly reminded to be on the lookout for this violation and in these financially troubled times I would really watch out. Your residence, driver's license info and truck registration need to all match. The best thing for you to do would be to have your brother purchase the truck in his name. You can then drive it and say you are borrowing it while he is in the Peace Corps or something



Then after a year and at least 7000 miles, you purchase it from him. At this point you register it in California. Now regarding sales tax - I know that if you purchase a vehicle from an immediate family member in CA you don't have to pay sales tax!! But I don't know if that applies to ou-of-state family. If not, you'll pay CA sales tax on the sales price (which is an amount you tell them you paid - as long as it is within reason. )



I recently went through the hassle of resistering an out of state vehicle in CA that had less than 5000 miles. Luckily I went to a AAA office instead of the DMV to do it - and managed to work with an attractive young lady who didn't know much about cars. We got it registered with 5000 miles, window tint all around and waayyy wider than legal tires. (It was a Jeep Wrangler with DANA60 axles).



Diesels don't get smog tested so there isn't a concern there.

Hertz sells used trucks

In December i bought a used 2003 quad cab Ho six speed at hertz in Idaho. It had 175 miles on it and i got the remaining warranty,also got a great deal. I dont live in idaho so i didnt pay idaho tax but payed nevada when i licensed it. I told the salesman this summer i would be up to get a car for my daughter. He said if i knew what i wanted to call him a week before i went up and he would have the car there waiting for me . He said he can get what ever you want with a weeks notice. This is in twin falls idaho if any one wants the guys name and number i have it.

They probably targeted her because of the out of state plates. When I was pulled over I asked if I had done something wrong. Officer said no, but noticed the out of state plates and wanted to know why I was there, where I was going, etc. . I made the mistake of saying I was headed to work. I don't think he would of bought the "I'm a tourist visiting" story from the way I was dressed and the work/lunch coolers, hard hats and tool belt in the back of the truck ( I was working for a roofing company at the time).

She told me they pulled her over because of a "reigistration issue"- and when she handed them a CA drivers license and a Nevada registration tag, it was all over. :{

Buy the truck out of state and take a nice trip up to Alaska. By the time you get back, it'll have more than 7K on it.

The way I look at it is that it will take at least four months before the license plates get here. No... it WILL take four months. LOL . And in the mean time put some miles on it after all 7500 miles in 6 months is not that great and also I planed on getting Colorado drivers license. The only thing that won't match is the address on insurance card but plan on telling Mr. officer that I'm working in Colorado on a job scheduled to last about one year and have a residence there however my family did not relocate with me since I own my home and at the end of the year I will be back in California.

We bought our 2002 in Texas......

Originally we were told they could register it for us. Not to be. Went to the DMV and they said it didn't meet Ca. pollution standards. It turns out new or not if you have 7500 miles on it they consider it used. We drove around for 6 months with the Texas temp tags. They don't put dates on them



At 8000 miles we registered it saying that it was driven in Texas all that time. Had temporary work out there and needed a truck.



Even better news is we saved on six months of tags.



That much less money the Jack*ss governor of this state can't spend!!!

Bought out of state

I just brought into to CA a 2003 purchased from Dave Smith Motors in Idaho. I ordered it as a CA model. Upon going to DMV the first thing they looked at was the CARB tag on the engine block also keep in mind you dealer will issue you an MSO, Manufactures Statement of Origine. The MSO goes to DMV which then becomes your tiltle. Also if you are a CSAA member go into one of their offices and get the information on bringing into the state a veh from another state. Best of luck to you. PS, DVM will have you weight the truck. Make sure the tank is almost emty and remove the tail gate and spare tire. Gary

I think the point of buying out of state for these folks is to get a "non-CA" truck - in other words, the H. O. which is currently not available in CA.

Just thinking out loud but what if you had someone you trusted (out of state) buy the vehicle in their name title it and then sell it to you? Would it be considered used regardless of mileage?

Steve, According to the CAL DMV it would still have to meet the 7,200 mileage rule. I wish the best to all that what the HO and can beat the State of CA. First it was cigarettes, then guns, now its my truck. Gary

A few years ago I was under the impression that the CA DMV had a little known “out of state” (i. e. not advertised) “distressed” or maybe “emergency” purchase permit. Designed so that if you were traveling out of state and had an accident where your vehicle was totaled you could purchase non-CA pollution equipped vehicle. The out of state selling dealer would call the CA DMV for the proper papers to get the exemption to get it registered in CA on your return. If this true I wouldn’t try it unless the vehicle was actually totaled. It is too easy for the CA DMV to check!



Maybe if you blew an engine/lost the transmission etc. and the vehicle wasn’t worth repairing and you were FORCED to buy a new (non-CA approved) vehicle, the out of state selling dealer could contact the CA DMV to get the proper papers. Don’t know if it would work. Just another idea!



A call to the CA DMV- I am planning a trip out of state and got to wondering if, “I have an accident and my vehicle is totaled can I purchase a new vehicle and bring it back into CA legally”?



It is amazing what kind of information you can get when acting “dumb” while trying to do things legally!
