Would like to hear everyone's thoughts on by-pass oil filters. I run two 3500s in a hotshot bussiness and the idea of extending oil changes sounds good.

All bigger diesels come factory equipped with bypass filtration. There must be a reason. Essentially, they route a small portion of the total oil flow thru a filter with much finer media, so it takes out smaller particles. On my big truck I have a full flow filter, the factory bypass filter, and a Spinner II centrifugal bypass filter. Even with the factory filtration, you wouldn't believe how much crap that Spinner takes out of the oil that would otherwise either still be in suspension in the oil or deposited on the interior engine surfaces. I can't recommend the concept highly enough, although to read the TDR posts it's possible that adding such a filter would void your warranty for reasons inexplicable to me.

In my opinion, with the type of business you have, you would get the greatest value from bypass filtration.

I would use a very high quality, fully-synthetic motor oil & the bypass filter. I would, also, use oil analysis to test the oil. That way, you could see when the oil is starting to lose its ability to protect your engine & then change the oil.

There are many different styles of bypass filters, on the market. I would go over to a website entitled "bob is the oil guy.com". Check out the bypass filter forum & truck diesel engine oil forum, for some ideas of what's available.

A lot of people like TP (toilet paper) filters for their ability to clean the oil to sub-micronic levels. They work very well but, require more changing than some other types of filters (every two to three thousand miles). Also, you have to add "make-up oil" at each filter change, which, is an added expense. Being that you are on the road, a lot, this could turn out to be somewhat inconvenient.

Do a lot of reading & thinking before you make your purchase. You will come up with questions & eventually be able to make an educated decision about which filter will serve your specific needs, the best.

Do the same with the oils. Read the used diesel oil analysis forum to get an idea of which oils are the most robust & will fit your needs, the best.

I believe you are, probably, the perfect candidate for this stuff.

I ended up choosing an Oilguard Bypass Filter (oilguard.com). Check out their website. There's a lot of good, general bypass information, there. They had them on sale over the fourth of July, which, put me over the edge. I'm not trying to "sell" you on Oilguard, just letting you know what I chose. Oilguard may not be the best, for you.

I'm, seriously, thinking of trying Schaeffer's 9000 synthetic oil. Read lots of good stuff about it & it's reasonably priced. (Never heard of Schaeffer's or Bypass Filtration til I got on the bob is the oil guy.com (BITOG) site. )

Good luck with your search.

I've run an Amsoil By-pass (BMK-11) and the Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine 15W-40 oil in my last three CTD trucks. Using Oil analysis, I've run as high as 105,000 on a single drain, and at that time, the oil was still in "suitable for continued use" as per the oil analysis lab.

My current truck ( see sig) now has over 53,000 on the oil and it too is still "suitable for continued use" as per the lab results.

I use a Filtakleen . 5mic. absolute with dyno oil 135,000 and excellent analysis. Maybe a little overkill but at my age this will probably be my last truck. I I also have a coolant filter, besides it's paid for.

Change frequency

It took a total of 1 to 1. 5 hours and I change every 10,000. I really like the Filtakleen but their are other's that are very good to.

Thanks for the replies. My trucks are a '05 and a '06. Thinking of putting amsoil system on them. What do ya'll think?
