Hey fellas, I'm about to purchase an oil bypass filtration system. I'm going to put the return going to the valve cover and will drill and tap it to except the 1/8 npt fitting. Do you guys know the drill bit and the tap thread to use for a 1/8 npt?

Also I want to install a petcock for oil sampling... . where is the best place for this? The return to the valve cover after filtration? The incoming pressure from the engine before filtration? Just curious so I know what fittings I need. Thanks

Drill Info

rhickman,

Go to the user conrol panel and enter your truck info. It will help us help you without asking question about your truck.

I have a oil bypass system also and ran the return line back into the oil filler tube. I have also seen them in the valve cover.

Good Luck!!:p

Sorry didn't think the truck mattered. Thanks for the link, i bookmarked that one. So where's the best place to sample? before or after the bypass?

I have a stock 2002 3/4 ton 6 spd.

You want to sample before the bypass filter. If its doing its job after the filter will have less "stuff" in it. Some bypass filters don't like to have the oil return "uphill". We have used a special plug that replaces the oil drain plug and also put a tee in the turbo oil dump line in the rubber hose connecting the two metal pipes.

Amsoil makes a swivel fitting (for about $8) that you can mount right in your oil cap. Just mill or drill a flat area in the center and then drill a thru hole for the fitting.

The nice thing about this setup is you can monitor the flow by removing the cap and inspecting it. I don't replace my filter until the flow slow down. If you ever remove the bypass you can just put a new fill cap on it.

If you install a "petcock" in the "input" line to the By-pass, you will have as much oil pressure as the pump puts out at that RPM when you are sampling. Just remember this, because when you open the valve, the oil will come out with great force! This is why I always take the sample from the return side, at least if you are using the Amsoil by-pass, which I think you are. Amsoil Inc. recommends this also. Hardly any pressure at that point, and very little flow.

Crabman gave you the info on the drill size for the 1/8 NPT size.

Thanks Wayne, I figured the low pressure side would be the best. I can just see 45 psi flowing all over the place while trying to take a sample.

I'm really close to ordering, I just want to wait until my oil change is do and do it all at once. I may put one of these systems on my wifes VW TDI too!

I bought one of the Amsoil filler-cap swivel return attachments for my '02 at May Madness last year, went to install it, and discovered the threaded part wasn't long enough to reach completely thru the cap, so couldn't install and use it - if I am to use it, I'll hafta find a way to extend the threaded part an additional 3/8 of an inch or so - or maybe I was sold the wrong one for my year truck? Wayne?

"wasn't long enough"

Danged if that don't make ya feel inferior. :(

Maybe it's your technique man. Try pushin harder. ;)

Sorry Gary, I just couldn't pass that one up. Are you trying to go all the way through the cap? I just drilled a big hole in the bottom of mine so I could put the nut up inside.

Gary and others, I actually went over to Wayne's house last week and talked to him personally. To get that amsoil adapter to work he added a adapter to the end of the threading. This made it a hair larger, but reaming the hole a little bigger was simple enough. This allowed it to protrude through to get threads on it.

The only reason I don't want that fill cap design is Wayne said he is having some issues of leaking coming up with it and in a case or two the JB Weld was coming loose (perhaps why it leaks as well)

I wasn't keen on taking apart my cap and glueing it back together, Wayne and I agreed that drilling the valve cover was a little more permanent, but shouldn't have a leak problem if done properly.

I think Wayne is an excellent dealer and a stand up guy. He has a nifty demo on dino gear oil vs. synthetic gear lube in his freezer... I was shocked at the difference in cold! He's got tons of other demo trinkets too, very interesting stuff!

Thanks for the help, I'll post pics of my install when I'm finished.

I'm pretty sure the 1/8" to 1/4" bushing is the one used to extend the BP-89 swivel. Then a standard 1/4-20 nut to tighten it down.

just get the CPFF billet adapter and both in and out are at the old filter location... sweet set up. . much better than Amsoil's adapter that's pot aluminum

I did buy CPFF's battery mount, but opted for just the single bypass not the dual system. I do not want that much oil routed away from the engine.

I didn't want to glue mine back together because I was impatient and didn't want to wait. So I take the one piece cap off my wife's Nissan Xterra and found that it fit. Just had to drill the hole and I'm good to go. Then went to Auto Zone to get a replacement for the Xterra.

Hope this helps,

Darren

Hyde that's great to know for anyone planning on doing this. Just pick one of those up and your set.

Bill CPFF is a member, he builds billet adapters to replace the cast stuff amsoil and other companies hand out in the kits. Hit nifty SS hoses work great with the amsoil dual bypass kit. Check his website out here CPFF

Call him up, he's helped me decide what i wanted to do along with amsoilman.
