Just a quick question on the use of the the amsoil bypass filter setup. Is there any reason why there aren't more out there? Is it $ or just not any good or what? Best place to mount one on the 03 if one should decide to go that way?

The only reason I can think of is that our CTD's will last 450,000 miles if abused and 1,000,000+ if well taken care of. I'm not sure what the need is for it

The reason I use one is because of the miles I drive. I'll usually run about 10,000 miles a month. My truck is just over 3 months old and I have almost 33,000 miles on it. Just don't want to spend all my time changing oil. With the bypass setup I can go a long time between oil changes. Don't know exactly how long it will be on this new engine, but will go with the oil analysis and go from there.

EB thanks for the info. I think I'm going to put one on as I just don't like changing oil laying in the snow in the winter and I have better things to do in the summer (fishing) but where did you mount it? I'm thinking on passengers side just forward of the front tire it looks like there is enough room.

Dual Bypass Filter

I bought and installed the BMK-15 Dual bypass filter and installed it in about 4 hours with a buddies help. I mounted it under the hood on the passenger side, both filters can be touched from the ground. I can email pictures if you want.

I posted some pictures in my gallery. I used (2) 12" pieces of 3/4 angle. Drill 5/16 clearance holes 1 1/2 inch up . There are existing threaded holes at side/front of head I mounted the angles too. I used 5/16 set screws and nuts to attach my angle but I believe a 3/8 or 1/2 long bolt will go in. I welded a 2" flat bar the width of the holes and mounted my amsoil block to that. The oil lines run just in front of the turbo housing. I've had no problems with this setup. You have about 1 3/4 inch clearance from bottom of filter to top of exhaust manifold. This allows plenty of room for filter changes.

A VERY interesting response from Fleetguard!

I emailed Fleetguard to ask them if they offer a bypass filter setup for the 5. 9. Here's their response (cut and pasted):

_______

Thank you for contacting Fleetguard.

Cummins does not recommend using a by-pass filter system on

the Cummins ISB, 5. 9L engine. Your may call the Cummins hot

line at 1-800-343-7357 for more details.

_______

Now, I'm not saying this will stop me from installing a bypass filter on my truck, but it sure made me think twice!!

Wish I had a dollar for every bypass filter successfully installed on Cummins engines used in 18 wheelers, stationary engines and various industrial/commercial setups - REGARDLESS of Cummins "recommendations"... ;)

03" & 04" By-Pass

Gary - I'd be happy with . 50cents !!!!

I just finished making a second batch of mounting kits for the 03" and 04"s.

I have reviewed Ralph Wood's website, but am still a little confused about his filters. He sells replacement filter elements, but I thought it was just T. P. ? Is there a reason you can't use the Charmin provided by your friendly neighborhood grocer?

And what about his fuel filter? Does it come with a pusher pump? I know I could ask him, but thought I'd open the discussion here first.

I did speak with Ralph over the phone, and as U2 mentioned he's very knowledgeable and seems quite honest. No, the fuel filters don't come with a pusher pump. I love the idea of using T. P. or paper towels as filter elements, and may very well go that route. Just need some more research first. :)
