Fast Coolers - Valuable Mod?

Need some input on bypass system. I only use my 01 cummins for towing a 5th wheel. I put only 5000 miles a year on it. I have a 92 cummins for back and forth to work and dirty jobs. I `m goiing to put amsoil in it this weekend before going to Myrtrle beach. The truck only has 10,000 miles on it. I need some input, should i change it once a year, or go to a bypass system? :D

You need to change the oil every 3-4 mos to keep acids in the oil from deteriorating the bearings.

the condensation in the oil causes aicds. daily driving heats theoil and cooks off the water. When they sit the acids stay there and eat the soft metals--- bearings.

Bypass or not. Sitting is very hard on a vehicle.

I just called Amsoil and asked if you could keep your oil in your truck for one year? And will the acids eat the bearings or will there be any other metal destruction because of this? I was informed that the additives in the Amsoil oil have in fact been tested to last a year. So I would say go for it

Oil is important but oil filtration is more important. Most oil filters only filter to 20 microns. Some of the good ones filter to 5 microns. Amsoil sells a BE100 that filters to 1 micron. That is what I use. It only makes sense. Through research most of the damage done is at start up and particles under 5 microns.

You can use the "best oil" in the world but without good filtration you are still putting undue ware on your components.

F. Y. I I did the switch at 12,000. I am at 49,820. I also went to the Dual Remote bypass. I did loose some P. S. I. 40 to 35 at normal running speed, but I believe this is due to the lighter viscosity of the Amsoil. OverFueled

BYPASS

THANKS FOR ALL THE GOOD INFO, I`LL PROBABLY CHANGE IT ONCE IN SPRING AND ONCE IN FALL :--) RON

For your 2001 that is driven 5000 / year and has 10,000 miles total on it -

Change the oil and filter once per year. Change the oil and filter when you are going to be storing (not using) the engine for the longest period of time so that fresh oil is in the engine.

If you were to add a true bypass oil filter system (one that filters to 1 micron to remove soot particles) you could change the oil based on oil analysis or some arbitary figure such as a time of 1 to 4 years.

The breakdown in the oil is based on amount of contamination and heat. Since you have very low mileage and assuming that you do not idle your truck for extended periods of time, 5000 and once per year will be conservative.

If you drive very short trips, say less than 5 miles per trip to accumulate 5000 miles per year, than you might consider changing more frequently as the amount of fuel and soot dilution as welll as water contamination (from condensation and cold engine running) would be considerably higher.

Same methodology on tires. At 5ooo per year you may have to replace tires after only 20000 miles due to age and weather cracking while most would get 50,000 to 60,000 or more on the same set of tires.
