My CD changer died so I am looking at replacing the factory setup with a Pioneer headunit (possibly a DEH-P8MP). I am also going to incorporate a XM tuner and I have found the Pac SWI-X that will let me incorporate the steering wheel buttons for controlling the unit. I understand that an aftermarket radio like the Pioneer requires that the stock amp be bypassed. I think(hope)the Pioneer will have plenty of power to drive the speakers directly for my use.

My questions are: What is involved in wiring around the factory amp? Is a plug in harness availaable to do it? Do I have to run new wiring to all the speakers or can it be handled right at the amp?

Thanks in advance.

Myself, I like to keep everything STOCK. I just got a NEW "take out" 6 disc changer indash on eBay for $180. Easy install and It sounds great. I was going to do the subwoffer and amp thing but after seeing the price and then worry about parking at the local mall and the thought of some punk breaking into my truck and rip it out, I went with the factory hi end stuff. I would say, check out eBay. I know you can find the stock am/fm/cd unit for as little as $25 and as high as $100 if it is just a replacement you are looking for.

Good luck on what you do! :)

I am considering this too, but I hate having the Sky Fi sticking out and would like to incorporate it into a head unit. Also the MP3 and WMA file capability of the aftermarket units is very attractive. Imagine being able to put 10 or 20 albums on one CD. My research is saying I have to go around the stock amp and I am just wondering who has done this and how much trouble it is?
