I don't think you need one, but they are nice sometimes. I made a trip to Tokepa, KS and back and it was very handy. The truckers would give warnings about the whereabouts of state troopers as well as road closures and accidents in the area. I have several friends that I tow with so we use CB's for communication.

I have a CB in my trucks just for long highway trips. You don't need it, but it is good to know what is going on when you need to.

Good question. I have been wondering if I should bother with putting one it my truck. I have one in the Jeep since we use it to talk to one another on trail runs.

Very rarely hear anyone on the CB. It's a dying thing IMO.

 That's BS almost all clubs will tell you that you must have a CB installed for any club events such as the rubicon trips out here in california.

NWBombers use CB 10 for Bombvoys to events.

When you don't have one you can feel really out of the loop.

The non CB guys need to be in the middle.

I have had a CB in all my trucks for the last 35+ years. I would not go on the road without one. I use it for highway trips mostly, but still the quickest way to get accurate traffic information anywhere, period. It is still a good emergency communication alternative when cell phones don't work. A GPS can tell you routes, but it can not tell you of current route problems. The cost is minimal and if you want to make the antenna install easy use a window mount. I have used window mount CB antennas in my last three trucks and they work ok for my needs. Just my . 02.

Probably. I've had the CB in the Jeep since I bought it in 2002 and it just so happens most club require CBs. Works out good. In AK most people were using VHF radios in the 4x4 community.

I had the thru window setup in my Jeep for a while and it didn't work very good. It ended up burning up my radio.

What channel do most truckers chat on? I remember it used to be 19, but I've never heard anyone on 19.

I really have to disagree with you here. CB's are definatley not a dying thing. You can still find CB shops every 10-20 miles between truck stops in my area on up to KY. I personally have been in and out of CB's a couple of times because of locals who liked to buy big linears and not let anyone talk because they didn't like the local tech @ the CB shop.

I currently have a old style Cobra 148F BOMBed to the max in my Dodge, I still have my first CB a Cobra 25 BOMBed to the max for my old chevy, and I'm in the process of setting up a base station @ my house with a old Uniden Grant XL.

I absolutely hate getting on an interstate without a CB in the truck. Which kills me cause I drive delivery trucks all over TN and southern KY everyday for a living. However, in my own personal truck..... you will not catch me going to a pull, KYDTR meeting, IRP, or SDX "WITHOUT" a CB in my truck. :D :-laf

CB's are not a dying thing yet! ;)

They don't seem as common as they were before cell phones, that's for sure. When I was in high school, most of my buddies had CBs and that's how we got ahold of each other if we weren't at home.

Now people kind of think it's a "redneck" thing to have a CB. That doesn't bother me a bit though.

Recomendations on a good model? I have a Uniden 520XL in the Jeep with a Cobra power mic and that seems to work good.

I was thinking maybe putting the same setup in the truck with a nice lil' Wil. Just haven't figured out how I would run the co-ax. I don't want it to be rubbing all over the paint. I might wait until I get a new toolbox and mount 2 on each side.

There is a small sealed plug on the underside of the truck just ahead of the drivers seat. We knocked that out to run my power wires to the cab for my "foot warmer" ;) I have my coax actually coming through my CC window..... yeah not the best place but it works for now.

As far as a radio if your only needing to talk a few miles then yeah that would work. Me I wouldn't go any smaller than a Cobra 25/Uniden PC66 that's slightly moded..... but that's just me. ;)

When you mod a radio, what exactly do you do??

I personally don't mod them, I have a local tech who is flat out AWSOME! on radios. :D

I couldn't tell you what he does internally, I've looked in there before at home and I have no idea. I even joined a CB forum (cbradioforum.com) and I barely understand some of the stuff they talk about doing to the inside.

I'm sure you probably have a tech somewhere local that is good, or you could send you radio to me and I will take it to my tech and send it back if you want.

Every stock radio out of the box transmits @ 4 watts. My Cobra 148F does 45 watts, my Cobra 25 does around 40 watts, and my Uniden Grant will do around 50 when its done. ;) The more transmitting power you have the farther you will reach out to people, but that doesn't exactly mean they can reach back to you though.

I've mostly run Cobra 29 radios. A couple of 25s as well. They are all stock. I just bought a Magnum S-6 (10 meter radio) and has the Nitro knobs, that I have in KW. :) Had it setup for the "cb" frequencies, and it was peaked and tuned. It puts out ~45 watts. :D Haven't had it very long, but so far it is a really nice radio.

The truckers still use ch. 19. Some days they aren't very talkative. Others, you have to turn the radio down or off, because they won't shut up.

i belive 19 is the desegnated trucker channel. in my area tho its 17 but thats kinda of a local thing like norcal/west nevada

as for needing them no i don't think many peolpe do but i like it because like others have said its the best way to get information on weather and traffic and besides when your going late at night and you need to stay awake just find someone else and they will keep you up all night.

I currently have a Connex 4600 in my truck... replaced a Connex 3300HP. I also have a Cobra 29, a Uniden PC66, and a Uniden PC76.

I travel cross country and I could not imagine NOT having a cb... I usually have two cellphones and a GPS with me, but it is nice to be able to just reach down, and hit a key to ask directions... a GPS won't tell you the best route around an accident... a cell phone is a little clunky and your buddy in state X isn't going to be able to tell you there is an accident in state Y.

IMO, for a good basic cb, you can't beat a Cobra25, Cobra29, Uniden66, or Uniden 76... have one of these tuned and peaked (cost you an extra $20), add a high quality antenna (mag mount in the center of the roof is about the best), and it's all you need.

I was thinking of that, I never put the setup in my Jeep on an SWR meter. I should probably do that one of these days.
