Ok here goes. What is the best C- tane to use. A C- tane with a high number or one with a low number. Around here there is 40 c-tane and 42 c-tane. Hess has the 42 and I have been told by a few people that there fuel has alot of water in it. Then this guy at work tells me that when he went to diesel school he was told that the lower the C-tane the better. Help... ... ... . Mike

Cetane is the diesel equivalent of octane. most fuel is 40-45C, premium's are about 50C. Basically more is better , do a search here or abroad there is all sorts of info on the subject.

The higher the cetane number, the easier the diesel is to ignite (basically opposite of octane which retards the ability of gasoline to ignite).

In a diesel you want the fuel to start burning as soon as it's injected into the cylinder. The slower it is to ignite, the more fuel there is in the cylinder and it all lights off at once. . . creating more clatter and knock, which reduces efficiency.

In the old days cetane was generally in the 50s but not anymore :( If only one could time-travel and bring home some of the good stuff!!!

Hi Mike, some high tide out @ Shinnecock last Saturday :eek: We wanted to go on the ocean side, but they would not let us had to go up on the hill.

As for the cetane, higher is better, I fuel up @ a local OK Petroleum (believe it or not). Their cetane level is 45, a few trucking/carting companies have an account there so they are pumping diesel. There are trucks there fueling up most mornings when I pass by and go to work. At least I know the fuel has not been sitting for a long time. I also found them to be one of the cheapest around @ 1. 73 9/10. I also add an additive with every tank in the winter, every other in the summer, boosts cetane helps lube pump and injectors I use Stanadyne performance formula (www.dieselpage.com/additive.htm).

I just changed my fuel filter @ 10,000 miles I had no water, the filter was a little dirty, but I think I could have gone another 5000 without any problems. By the way DO NOT BUY FILTERS FROM DODGE, I bought a fuel filter when I picked the truck up just to have, they got me for $43. 00 for 1 fuel filter:{ , I just paid

$ 58 for 4 oil and 2 fuel filters from Geno's.

CYA on the Beach, Pete:rolleyes:
