Well I knew this day was coming:{. I switched to diesel trucks 12 years ago to escape the smog tax and now its hitting me again. I am going to need to take my 02 in for a smog and will remove the edge box etc so it will pass visual inspection. My question is how many operation cycles does the PCM/ECM need to go through without the box installed for OBD codes to clean up or is there a method to clear the codes w/o an OBDII tool.

Yah, A friend of mine has pulled his air box in put the stock back in. Seems to be some confusion about the snap test and what they are looking for. Will be interesting times. my truck is stock so no worries here.

I don`t know exactly how many cycles it takes to get the obd II computer to run all it`s diagnostic tests. but whenever the battery goes dead or is disconnected , the MIL or check engine does not come on , but I have to drive the vehicle for 3 or 4 days of normal driving for the computer to do all its start up tests. you cannot reset any stored codes without an obd II scan tool. arround here Auto Zone parts house will check for codes and reset the computer. check with your local parts house. a good scan tool will be able to clear any stored codes and tell you when all tests are completed. those are two different functions.

I just renewed my truck's registration and there was nothing about any smog requirements. Perhaps this varies county by county or they will grab me for sure next year?

The '03+ run on can-bus and for the time being this eliminates any OBD11 test is how I undersrtand it. They will check the dash for the CEL light though. Air filters and aftermarket air horns and fuel pumps are supposed to be Kosher also. Mine's not due until 12-11 so by then hopefully,it'll be straightened out.

From what I understand the state is talking about Dropping this for diesel's cause it is going to kill the small trucking companies This was told to me by a good friend that work's for Caltrans and is 1 of the higher up's

I can't remember which article I saw it in, but it said that your test goes by the Vin number, even numbers go in the even numbered years, odd numbers in the odd numbered years. I hope that is true, as I wouldn't have to woory about it ubtil Oct 2011.

Anybody know what happens if you don't pass? The whole thing seems very subjective (and pointless), but if I go in and they fail the truck for one reason or another... . what happens then?

I'm ****** about this because anybody who modified their truck in any way when it was legal to do so is now going to be screwed. If you bought a rig second hand and don't have the stock stuff to reinstall, what are you supposed to do. In my worthless opinion, they should have started smogging diesels starting with this model year if they want to implement testing them.

#@$%!

Well... . after reading up on this more, I pulled off the Edge controller and took it in for the test. It passed fine. The guy testing it looked over everything, plugged into the data link, and did the visual "smoke test". I was worried because my truck does smoke (always has) and he basically said "All diesels smoke... "

Anyhow, guess I'm good for another 2 years. One of the reasons I bought a diesel was because I don't care for all this smog BS to begin with. Oh, well... guess the state needs the money more than me.

Anyone around Sacramento can give me a shout. I'd be willing to clear codes with the Smarty and maybe even try the half-power setting if you have bigger injectors. I have an odd VIN so I didn't get stuck smogging the beast this year, but I plan to put the stock airbox back in for the visual. Pull the Blue Chip box or see if I can convince them it is just an EGT/boost monitor... ?

a lot of panic for naught on this smog check unless your heavy in mods. i plugged in and checked for codes to clear before i went, based on the misinformation out there. visual and smoke (snap) test are it. there is no plug in to see codes. only engine lite check. no light, no problem. go to the general diesel thread to see my results. i know two guys with smarty that passed. several durmaxs passed with hypertech. i pulled my van aken as it's questionable if its legal even with the carb d-500 eo approved number as its was for 98/99s. and it was visable. i didn't want to chance it. haven't heard from van aken on their response to my letter to see if there was an update to eo. like . 44 said all diesels smoke, and the amount will be the biggest issue for failure. you leave a heavy cloud you'll have issues.

Van Aaken's out of the programmer biz I believe.
