2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Ca smog checks diesel pick ups

I could not believe it. My DMV registration paper work came yesterday and it stated I need a smog certification. ????? An 01 diesel?? I checked and sure enough, as of January 2010, California now requires ALL light duty pick ups with a diesel engine to be smogged!



I called the smog shop and they told me all they do is look for non factory mods and rev up the engine to check for excessive smoke. $79. 00. Simply amazing. i have lived her all of my life. 57 years. I have wanted to move for a long time, but this crap makes me want to move even more!!#@$%!#@$%!#@$%!

Not much better here in AZ but at least it's only the stupid snap idle test for opacity every year - no concern for aftermarket equipment as long as it passes.

I am interested in what "look for non factory mods" are. On the 12-valve 1998, other than the screws on the AFC housing, you could not see fuel mods. Would ant turbo other than a stock be considered a non factory mod? How would they check the timing (about two hours labor)? Would a aftermarket air cleaner be a non factory mod? How about the exhaust.

It appears to me, all they could see on the 12-valve, would be Cat removal or EGR removal.

My son has mod's on his 04 and they didn't even see them some you can't see some you would have to know what your looking at . He has a Snow Meth/water didnt even try to hide the hose and control valve's. Different turbo they didnt even think about that as being different as far as I know. He has 50 hp injectors I know they didnt know that! They did ask about the different fuel pump and filters he gave them an EO Number and they gave him the paperwork and said thank you. In my opinion this is just a way to collect some money for the state. Arnie's wife must need a new face or something because it's just a scam.

It could be a lot worse. They could split hairs. I really do not think the smog guys are as stupid as the ARB. At least they work on vehicles. I would give them the $49 just to leave me alone, and to keep the politicians off my back.

Be sure and get the MT license also if you're planning on living here awhile with MT plates. If you get pulled over plates,license and registration must jive. Most states work it this way. Military, gratefully are exempt.

Im moving to MT have Dodge reg. there now and my Inter-trash-inal is also wife selling MB not much use for MB limo diesel in MT. Have MT license for truck driving ( never know what you might need it for)

If you register out of state, you need to change your insurance to an out of state insurer also. i know a guy who had his truck registered in AZ. He kept it insured through his CA insurer. He had a crash and all hell broke loose.
