I just recently traded in my gas quad cab for a 2001. 5 CTD 4x4 and have a silly question for California drivers.

Do we or do we not have to smog our diesel trucks?

Can I add a 4" exhaust and remove the cat?

Any chance in the future if I remove the cat I may have problems?

Thanks for any help on these.

kbond,

The 24 valve diesels do not have cat converters. If you look underneath, you'll see a muffler and a sound resonator. Cummins certified this engine without having to use a cat.

So far CA still doesen't smog diesels, but I'm sure they'll get around soon enough, because there's alot of money they could be making on it.

Kbond, Where you at???

I'm in the San Diego area. And no you don't have to smog it. As far as the 4" you'd be better off buying some other mods till your egt's get out of control. Other than sound that is.

Smog on Sale

In California, the only time a diesel has to be smoged, according to a local smog shop, is when the truck is sold.

Thanks for all the reply's.

Didn't even notice I didn't have a cat under there. O'well, lots to learn.

Thanks again.

Mr B,

I live in the city too and the guys at the smog station say I will have to start testing mine after it gets to be 3 or 5 years old, can't remember which.

Thanks MikeR - I'm sure the good state of WA will tell us. . I had heard the all OBDII vehicles smogged themselves and didnt require smog test. Maybe I heard wrong and they require testing after they are a certain age.
