Anyone installed and using the cab air filter available from Geno's? It installs under the outside cowling below the windshield. Kind of a pain to remove cowling, but might help to remove pollen and other irritants. How often would you have to replace it to be effective? Thanks!

I've been using one the last couple of years. Just ordered a replacement filter, which I do each spring.

Yes, it does cut down on pollen and dust getting into the cab, providing you keep the windows up!

It goes over the stock cowl, at least on the 2nd gens.

I just assumed it went under the cowling, but perhaps the kit is to hold it on the top of the cowling-sounds better! I wasn't sure if you could go a year between changes, but would save money on filters.

Don't know what is in windshield washer fluid but it sure does stink up the cab when sprayed on windshield. Will be curious to see if filter helps smell as well as pollen.

I have one on my 2nd gen. Easy to put on and it is over the cowling as stated previously. I got it mainly for keeping the chunks out of the hvac system. I just replaced my filter a couple weeks ago. It had at least 80k on it maybe more like 100. It was toast. I couldnt believe how much dust, dirt and crap was in it. The junk was literally falling out of the filters when I pulled them out. I hadnt worried about changing it as I was mainly using it to keep the pine needles etc out of the hvac but I will be changing it yearly now.

I installed one on my 2004. 5 about a month ago. Installs over the cowling and installs in about five minutes. It seems to help with the odors and the dust is defintely less. So far, so good.

This sounds interesting, but I wonder that with the filter material in an exposed location, it would get wet with every rain. This might create a environment to grow mold, mildew and nasty stuff like that, which would get sucked right inside.

Do you think this could be a problem?

it clips on the top of the cowl with really wimpy plactic clips. i've broken most of the clips off and am useing metal hooks. really cheap if you ask me. i've replaced the element with an house filter material that is dubbled up. since i have lung problems and drive every day in la smog. it helps tremendously the heppa filter does the job. it's hard to smell anything outside the cab. when i replaced the element i put the black filter element (looks like scotch pad) on top since the original white filter looked so dirty after only a month of driving... worth the money you just need a better mounting system

As greg said it installs on top with no tools . I however have had zero issue with the clips or mounting. I installed it once and it's done. Maybe if you pull it out and put it in a bunch of times changing filters you could have an issue. Genos doesn't know much about these so I called cab-fresh directly. They said the filters are not affected by water, and should last a year or so . They said the white does change color with time etc , but will not get moldy or smelly or anything evil... :) In any case, it IS cheap - so don't expect a $300 piece... it's $50. My thought was that if it helped at all, it's worth the $50. I honestly don't think it cuts down on odors very much at all... but it does keep the dust and pollen out. I would buy it again.

Thanks for the replies-I've ordered my filter this morning. Anything to help keep Pollen and Peanut dust outside of the cab! My LA is almost as bad as California's LA.

The black filter material is supposed to be carbon impregnated. That's what kills odors. Once it's used up (filled with odor particles) its replacement time. No way of telling if the carbon is adequate for the job. It depends on the requirements. Heavily smogged city drivers will probably use it up faster than someone who lives in clean-air country.
