I am preparing to purchase a truck cap or topper for my 06. While getting an estimate I told the dealer I didn't want the topper brake light hooked up. He informed me that the brake light was a Texas state requirement and he had to hook it up. I don't want this light scabbed into my truck harness with a blue crimpit. (cheap and prone to corrosion. ) I was thinking about running a wire plugged into the 4 wire trailer connection to the topper brake light. Is there a better way of doing this connection than I am aware of?

Thanks to you all for your help.

Don

There is a stray wire under your truck that is out of the wire loom all by itself... . that wire is the wire that most topper places use for the 3rd brake light for the topper... .

That wire should be labeled CHMSL for (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp). Ask the installer to solder his connection to the wire and cover it with heat-shrink tubing.

He may also try to remove the bulbs from your cab stop lamp. I prefer that they be left installed in case I need to go somewhere without the topper.

I assume this wire is near the existing 4 wire trailer plug? I didn't see it. . anyone know what color it is?

thanks

On my '98 it was white and located between the spare tire and the frame on the driver's side. That probably won't help you with an '06, but who knows?

if you tap into the trailer connecter plug your topper stop light will flash every time you use your right or left turn signals. the connector is wired to operate using you brake and turn signals on just 2 of the wires on the connector. the wiring for the lights mounted on your truck are wired different. hope this helps.

Found it!!! I think. A white wire taped to the main harness near the spare tire and frame. Thanks again for the excellent help.

Another quick question re: the CHMSL, can I just unplug the wiring harness to the cab chmsl and put the lens back in? I didn't know if that would be a better deal than pulling the bulbs. Will unplugging the harness cause chimes and buzzers to go off??

Thanks for your help.

Doughboy is right, on my second gen it is the tan/brn wire that feeds the brake light without flashing or having to buy the diode.
