Cab Noise on Crew Cab

Hey all you guys out there with a Crew Cab, do you get some roof noise when you hit a bump hard of go up a incline at a angle ? It sounds almost like someone hitting the roof when it happens. My thoughts on this are the cab is flexing, and I am thinking of adding a extra set of cab mounts under the door post on both sides. Any imput would be a great help.

1985 DODGE 1 ton Crew Cab(imported from California with no rust) W/8' box converted to 4X4 in 1999. Wish Dodge would build a new Crew Cab in 1 ton. Last year for the Crew Cab was 1985. If you want to know why I did all of this, 2 kids, one on the way and I can't stand Ford and Chevy. Crewcab, I believe the noise you are hearing is indeed the cab flexing, mostly the roof. Have you ever pushed down on the center of the roof? It is very springy. I dont really like the idea of the extra body mounts, I would worry about stressing other parts of the cab, possibly leading to cracks ect... I think it is just the nature of the beast.

I'm waiting for my truck to be delivered. I am sure that mine has to be the same as yours and murfs.

When I take delivery hopefully soon I'll let you know what mine sounds like on the bumps.

Do you have a headliner in your truck or is it just metal? I woould think a headliner would help dampen the "oil canning" noise to some degree.

I wish I had a head-liner, I need to start updating my interior. Did they ever make a crew cab with a SE/LE interior ? Does anyone know if any of the 91-93 seats or 2nd gen seats came in tan ? What I would really like to do is install some 2nd gen seats in my truck, but don't know if they would fit correctly. ALSO DO NOT get rid of your old seat brackets, the crew cab front seat brackets are about 1 1/2" taller that normal ones.

Crewcab, I went to a local auto frim and fabric supplier and bought "headliner" material which is thin cloth with a foam backing and some vynil top adhesive First clean the metal headliner with acetone or naptha and spray the glue to the roof and the back of the material let it get dry to the touch and with the help of a few friends lift the material in place (be careful the glue sets pretty much instantly) and roll it out with a new dry paint roller. I am going to also glue material directly to the A B and C pillars to cover everything (no plastic trim)this should help insulate and quiet things down somewhat. As to seats I am contemplating "takeouts" from a new "$#@%" Superduty. Im not sure about ford parts on my mopar though. P. S. I also installed an overhead console out of a mid 80's turbo new yorker with the eyeglass holder garage door holder and thermometer/compass (5. 00 at the local pick a part junk yard including the temp sensor from behind the grille. Spliced a few wires and viola! no more gadget envy to the new rams. also fhe dash panel is molded plastic and can be painted any color. Murfman

I am wondering if it might be easier to use a 1/8" hardboard backer for the "roof" headliner. Just get a 4x8 sheet and make up a cardboard template and trace it to the hardboard cut it out and glue the liner material to it. Screw the finished liner to the roof. #ad

My 88 D100 had a cardboard type liner that was installed in this fashion.

Hey Murfman how far down from the main part of the roof did you bring the headliner? It might be hard to make those curves without the material "puckering" on you.

I want to check your truck out in the near future. I'll give you a buzz before the swap.

Pjensen,
When you get your truck you will see the reason I did not use hardboard, the roof is two panels, the front half is the standard cab roof and it tapers dowm at its rear, so there is a "rib" for lack of better explination. down the center of the roof, and spacing hardboard below this "rib" wold cost me too much headroom (I'm 6'5" tall). The Headliner material is very strechy and conforms well to the curves of the roof. You could, I expect put 2 smaller hardboard headliners in the truck and leave the "rib" painted steel. It would be easier, but I wanted the finished look. Murfman #ad

I definitly need to check out your truck Murf!

It looks like my truck will be in Colorado by the am and then I have to make shipping arangements from there. Too much snow out west for me to risk trying to drive it back home in a weekend. I'll just have to be patient I suppose.

Just got my truck on Sunday. I have only driven it around 30 miles and didn't notice any canning noise or anything from the cab roof.

But then again the truck has a 440 gasser with 2 1/2 duals with flowmasters. So that could be distracting me.

I will be keeping an ear out for any noise from the cab flexing

Hey Paul, If you can find a used NP205 transfer case from a Cummins BUY IT, I have got $700 into mine converting it to take the Getrag/Cummins. Let me know if you want the part numbers and prices of what it is going to take to convert a gas np205 to a diesel np205.

I have a 1980 crewcab 4x4 w/360 gasser.
The roof does make bonging sounds when you put it in any kind of a bind like diagonally crossing a ditch. Also the bed hits the rear of the cab in that same situation. Just part of the deal.
Remember,that truck was made when Chrysler was on it's *** the first time and quality was not a top priority. Survival was.
I bought it new and had it for 12 years before I discovered that the front door liners were a completely different design than the rear ones. They were all black though. They used what they had on hand.
One other thing... . You could see light above the right rear door and could put your fingers almost through when it was closed and latched tight. Came that way new.
I still like it and still own it. Only 68k miles on it.

Jack, My "New" 83 has the same little dimples in the back side of the cab from the bed hitting it.

I thought all the articulation was suppose to be from the suspension and not from frame flex. LOL!!!

Oh well maybe I will just move the bed back on the frame another 1/2" or so and clear this problem up.

All Crew-Cabers! I am in the process of buying a '85 Crew Cab with sparse interior. No head liner or plastic trim around the doors and head liner. I will be converting a club cab to a crew cab in the near future and need the part numbers for the trim pieces that run along the top of the rear doors and the piece between the front and rear doors. I'm assuming that the other pieces will work from the club cab trim. These numbers are imprinted on the back of the trim. When anyone has them off could you please send the numbers! Chrysler is no help here as they have no info on the crew cab interiors. Any help here would be appreciated!

When I built the club cab it also did not have the head liner and trim, but it is all still available. For the headliner I used a foam backed material from an uppostery shop (available in many colors) and glued it up with 3M adhesive. Dyna-Mat was used everywhere inside and also inside of doors. Helped the noise a lot.
